Ubuntu 9.10 - DNS lookups slow with Eircom router

    Anybody else having this problem?

If you use DHCP with an Eircom netopia router, your /etc/resolv.conf points at the router's ip, and DNS lookups are extremely slow. If you modify your /etc/resolv.conf by hand to specify Eircom's DNS server IPs manually, it's lightning fast.

Stupidly dodgy bug that could be giving a lot of people headaches. I have seen it reported elsewhere that the same issue exists with Orange routers in France, and Comcast routers in the US. Amateur hour stuff. Crazy thing is, a Windows XP VM in Virtualbox on the same ubuntu install also using the router's IP as it's DNS server works lightning fast!

    Bah.

A lot of people are having the same issues. I did also. I didn't need to edit any config files, I just put in the OpenNDS servers into the wireless config and that fixed it. I don't know if that applies to everyone, but the few people I suggested it to all got it going properly.

Yeah you have applied the workaround solution.. whether you hand edit configs or apply them through a GUI makes no odds. It is a pretty ridiculous issue.

How exactly do you go about doing that?

Noticed yesterday after installing 9.10 that the internet was sooo slow.

This is how you do it - even if you don't use OpenDNS you can fill in your Eircom (or whoever) servers in the box. If you're not sure what DNS you use, log into your router and you should find it in one of the config pages there.

Hmm yeah I'm on Eircom, I put in the DNS servers according to the 192.168.1.254 page and restarted but it doesn't seem to have worked. This is what I have:

I kinda had a similiar issue with my firefox on Fedora 11...DNS look-ups were very slow. It was due to the fact that the system was doing IPv6 lookups first. Once I disabled that, all was fine.

Not sure where to disable that in Ubuntu though (or if its your problem!)

And are you connected to your router via ethernet (cable) and not wirelessly ?

Yep just came into this topic to say I know what I was doing wrong :o

I'm on windows now so I'll switch over later and change it, but yeah for some reason it just came into my head (wasn't even thinking of the problem) that I was changing the settings for the wired connection and not wireless. I presume there'll be similar options for my wireless connection where I put in the DNS addresses?

Yep. Let us know if that sorts it for you.

Yup it worked! I'm posting now on Ubuntu. Bout time. 9.04 didn't require any DNS addresses to be put in!

Anyway thanks for all your help

Should probably sticky this, as I imagine it's an issue for a lot of people.

Why is ubuntu using ipv6? Surely they foresaw that, using IPv6 would cause problems with most users......
