With all the searching I did yesterday for heart rate stuff, I came across this for the iPhone.

Has anyone come across this before and know of it? I am tempted to use this instead of forking out for the 705.

The problem is that the iphone battery is ridiculous and with the backlight on and the software running.. i give you max an hour an a half!

Yes, unless you have some way of charging the iphone on the bike or do short training runs, the battery life on the iPhone really means it can't be used instead of a dedicated unit.

I wish I could get an idea of the size but this might be an idea

A better idea for charging on the bike would be a dynamo hub, with something like this

EDIT: also if you read the comments on the solar charger, (as expected) it doesn't work. The iPhone needs a constant 5V to charge and the solar charge can't provide this.

There are solar/battery hybrids that will supply and appropriate charge to the iPhone. The battery charges the iPhone and the solar panel recharges the battery. I have one myself, alebit without the solar bit so I can't say how well that bit works. The charging from battery does work, very well in fact.

Having said that I think it would be difficult to see the iPhone as being ideal here compared to a HRM/GPS dedicated to the job.

If I phrase this correctly I could have an excuse to buy an iPhone from the OH.

She is horrified at the idea that I want to spend 450 on a phone and 450 on a bike computer.

This will mean I can probably get permission to buy an iPhone at least.

Charging from battery only works fine. Charging from solar is problematic because the solar power is trying to charge the batteries and also the charger is trying to charge the phone at the same time. At least that's my understanding of it.

It would only be a problem if the battery ran out entirely, there is no issue with having the battery charging the phone while being charged itself (I have only done this with an AC adapter but there is no reason it should be any different with solar other than the external battery charging itself slower.) The power for the device is coming from the battery.

My one is a Powermonkey BTW, great little thing. It has an optional solar attachment.

Yeah, I understand that. The only reason that the solar units don't work is that it's not outputting a constant 5V but you are right, if it is charging from the batteries, then the batteries should output 5V.
