Went to see this at the weekend, and while I was expecting good things (great reviews, and I'm generally a fan of Nick Hornby), I was fairly disappointed. It is by no means a bad film. The performances are top notch. Carey Mulligan is very good in the lead role, and fantastic to see Peter Sarsgaard (Saaaarrrrsgaaaarrrrd!) in a meaty central role. Nice smaller roles for the likes of Olivia Williams, Alfred Molina and Rosmaund Pike, although unfortunate to see minor
Sally Hawkins relegated to a single scene
. Content wise though, it is entertaining but ultimately a little too light. It is definitely a bit more refreshing than your typical romance/coming of age tale, but feels very throwaway (plus, I'm not always a fan of old English sensibilities). The lessons learned were pretty simplistic, and the characters actions weren't always fully believable
(Jenny's parents in particular seemed a little too willing to embrace the somewhat sinister older man suddenly catapulted into their daughter's life)
    - although perhaps this criticism is somewhat negated due to the fact it is based on a true story! Nice moments here and there
(the C.S. Lewis scene was very amusing)
    but overall relatively disposable.

    Anyone else seen it?
