Its to do with the new all ireland police service that President Paisley introduced just before he was canonised. Changing the PSNI to Garda on the cars was the only way to get catholics to join up so they said they may aswell go the whole hog and integrate the two services. It was also the only way that the Gardai could acquire water cannon without exceeding budgets.

Any potential recruits to An Garda Siochana could now end up patrolling the falls road on phase 2 of their training as there is no current recruitment to GARDA NI.

Further information in last weeks An Phoblacht.

I doubt this happens in any other country in the EU except this banana republic that the registration plate from another state is used on an official Police vehicle, complete farce of a place we live in

Or perhaps they are being used for the RSA for road safety advert with Northern counterpart as the northern plates are easier to photoshop after the dual run ad is made, in which case we don't live in a farce of a place ;)

Theres a film being made in Galway at the moment called the "Gaurds" with Brendan Gleeson the main actor, I reckon they are probally being used in the Film and are the property of the Film company.

I think they are making this into a film; http://www.kenbruen.com/guards.php

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1538402/

It was filming outside near my house the last day and were in the G Hotel in Galway during the week filming.

I dont think it was for a film, the squad car I seen was a proper squad car like the ones in the picture earlier in this thread, but it had blue lights on top of it too

If they were going to show a Garda car in a film it would want blue lights on it as well.

I was in Derry last weekend and saw an umarked police car with English plates giving chase to another car which I thought was unusual

Could have been a car that was kitted out in England and then sent over to the PSNI. The Garda Command and Control vehicles apparantly had UK plates on them before being sent over. There is a pic in the gallery thread.
