I saw a helicopter fly over Harcourt Street at 9 tonight with no lights on of any sort. Anybody know anything about helicopters with no lights?

Shhhh!!! Do you know if it was in transit or had it taken off from the barracks in Rathmines with IR lights on?

Alternatively, just stand in the middle of the road one hand up to stop them and the other pointing at their headlights, usually works. Do not do this on country roads. :pac:

I saw a black/dark green helicopter in the IFSC today at lunch time. I was standing near grand canal area and it looked like it was lifting off from the point theatre. There was no markings on it. Was this the same helicopter perhaps?

Hi guys, see the Post in the Military section about this, i think this should be locked.

I don't think this thread should be locked. It's all very well in the military forum where apparently the official secrets act applies. But if the Air Corps are swanning about Dublin city centre for all to see. Then it's no secret to anyone. A dark helicopter without lights is clearly Air Corps. If it's a military exercise so be it. We don't need to know what they're practising but we sure can talk about seeing it going on. You can also be quite sure all the local authorities have been informed well in advance. It's not as if there's a war on or an emergency of some kind.

In any case it's very likely we will read all about in one of the papers. Activity like that will always end up in the news.

Of course this thread should not be locked. There is no reason why any member of the public should not discuss in any public medium any form of public military activity of interest in the city. We are not in a state of war.

If the army chooses to fly over the city without lights then it should be discussed.

If the army chooses to do an exercise beside the East Link bridge in full view of commuters and in front of the offices of three radio stations then obviously they have nothing to hide.

If anybody is interested they were practicing absailing out of the helicopter onto the deck of a ship. Quite impressive. They seemed to be using the EC135 (?)

During the GAA 125 celebrations at the start of the season, the first game was played under floodlights in Croke Park. Just before the end of the game, one of the GASU helos started circuits per normal. Except it was very dark, and the helo had no external lights whatsoever. Was looking at it through binoculers, and could clearly see the inside of the cabin lit by the CRTs, but there were no nav or anticollision lights on.

If it was one of the AW139's then she had wheeled gear, if it was one of the EC135P2's then she had ski gear.

There is a nice little photo of an AW139 dropping troops onto the stern of the Irish Navy Flagship LE Eithne in Cork Harbour in this months issue of Flyinginireland magazine.

Yes, I would have to agree with you BD, it's an interesting enough thread. It would be sad to see the same paronia in relation to military matters creeping in here as it has done on other Irish Military web sites, rendering them useless in my opinion.
