just looking for some advice.. as most people do on here :D

im in the navy and have been for the past 5 years, i joined right out of secondary school so its all ive ever really known on the working front, recently went to chad with the army and have gotten back to work with the navy now but its not what i want to do anymore... so the question is should i quit the navy and get a different job(undecided what that can be) and go to college as a mature student (im 23), the thing that worries me is starting over again and not having the same wage as i have in the navy.. i just dont want to stay in a job i hate going to but quitting is a daunting thought...

    any advice??? :D

Have you considered a job as a police officer, American Indian chief, cowboy, biker, construction worker?

Village People tribute band was also my first answer.

If it's not what you want to do, then go for it.
It might mean having to move back in with your parents (if you don't have any savings, that is); or claiming Jobseekers' allowance (I don't know the Irish version of that?)

But the old clichés are always the best source of advice - just follow your heart.

If you want to start over again, go for it. You only live once

Can't you do some part time course and stay in the NAVY? There are ways around it other then quitting.

Stay in the NAVY until you've got a job or course landed. Save up so when you've left, you'll have a bit to fall back on if things get tough.

But ultimately if you don't wanna do the NAVY anymore, you may asweel leave. I (As do lots of other people) know what it's like to work a job you hate. Leaving was the best decision I ever made.

I was alot younger then you and was on a HELLUVALOT less pay so it was easier for me to leave.

    Do what's in your heart.

Or even do courses within the Navy.
Can you not specialise ? Eg. radio operator, electronics, mechanic/engines etc ?

the navy isnt really a steady 9-5 i could end up being sent to sea with very short notice therefor i couldnt be doin a part-time/night time course as sea would get in the way and also i wouldnt leave unless i had another job waiting to go into as for the saving thing i should be ok since i done alright from going to chad

thanks for the serious answer anyway just kind of a crossroads im in now i think

    Ahem,

OP, After Hours is probably the worst forum to post in if your after serious answers.

Try Work & Jobs or maybe the Military Forum. Good luck :)

courses with the navy are hard to get due to limited places and lots of applications, i am a radio operator already but have no interest in being in the navy in general its military life im sick of but as i said its a big change to make for me..

Probably not the best time to be considering quitting TBH.

funk all jobs available in Ireland ATM. You wont be able to just pick & choose a new career.

Open University/ Long Distance course whilst also working may be the best solution IMO.

Edit: Dont forget you wont be able to use the "I'm in the Navy" line any more either when chatting up birds ;) (presuming your a fella)

Its good to get the feedback of others but don't be afraid to think outside of your current skillset. You're a young bloke and there are still many opportunities, entrepreneurial or otherwise.
Think outside the box a little. That's how you stopped being a foetus.

I was once like you OP had to ask myself the same question, should I extend my 5 year contract in the Army?

    You've got a few choices;

    1) Stay in the Navy and scatch yourself, you will kick yourself in 10 years time for not getting out when you were younger, and it will haunt you. You will turn into one of those Salty Dogs on the base and spend your life cribbing.

    2) Stay in the navy and make a career for yourself, set your sights on a pots course and get the LS bars up. Put in what you want to get out of it.

    3) You love being a sailor but thought it would be different, then try the Royal Navy (not the most popular option with a lot of posters on Boards but its there if you want it)

    4) GTFO now and don't ever look back. Take a year out and chill head to Oz or Canada.

I went with option 2 if you want to know
