    Hey

I'm new to the dole,so far I've had two payments. At my first signing on,The girl told me that I will, from this week, get my payment on a friday instead of a wednesday. She also said that it will be available to collect Friday,Saturday and Monday.

Can anyone tell me if this is true!I'm just concerned because at the end of the month there is one weekend that i'll only be able to collect it on the Monday!

    Thanx

Prepared to be jumped on for this unfortunately! Where will you be if you can't collect it on Friday or Saturday (when you should technically be available or looking for work)?

Most post offices will keep it for 4-5 days including first day.

Most main POs have the payments for 3 working days. Ive only been 2 days late collecting mine (on fri when my day is wed) so i dont know after that. If you were told by the SW that you have 3 days you should have 3 days tbh

I'm going to England for a match with my boyfriend!it's only for the weekend and believe me I am looking for work.Do I need to inform them?I have no problem telling them I won't here for 3 days...it was organised before I was on the dole...........and if they don't pay me for those days, that's fine!

    Thanks for the advice anyways

Hi again. No problem. Unfortunately you do need to inform them. They could arrive for a suprise inspection or need to look at your bank records in future which might show you were out of the country (likelihood depending on whether you are on JSA or JSB). In addition, you cannot be classified as looking for work on those days as you would not be available for an interview in person for example. You will not miss payment if you inform them however, as you are entitled to two weeks paid holidays per year. I was away in Dublin recently for instance and I went in to explain. This was complicated by the fact that my first monthly sign on day was a day I was away! It worked out perfectly, I took 3 days from my 2 weeks and they allowed me to skip my first sign on day so to speak to the following month. They also put forward my payment in my post office that week by two days. So if your truthful they are really helpful. Just make sure to go in about 2 weeks in advance or they are less so. Enjoy England.

edit: by the way as far as I know, and Xiney might correct me if I'm wrong, you needn't say you are away on the Sunday (even if you are) as this would not be classified as a work day anyway, meaning you save a day's holiday for another time.

tommy21 is correct - and it doesn't matter if you tell them you're away Sunday since they don't deduct it from your holidays either way.

You have to sign the request so you need to go in. SWOs all over country are busy and in fairness you are not working. Best of luck.

Yes,I'm going Thursday to Monday too!I went to the swo the other day and qued for a good while and when I got to the top,the girl basically said I didn't need to inform them about 4 days!!Then she realised I will be away on the Friday..which is the day I got paid and wouldn't be back till Monday..so she gave me the form to sign and it basically stated that I will be paid in arrears the next week!

Yes you can, but, please, if you intend to spend Wednesday in your pj's, eating toast, listening to Gerry Ryan, looking on useless job websites, wondering what the hell a mystery shopper is, viewing boxsets of The Wire, listening to Joe Duffy or Moncreiff, texting people who are actually working, wondering why them and not you, eating leftover Christmas goodies, reading old newspapers and not out vying with the other 424,000 (approx) jobseekers like you and they (every man, woman and over 18 year old of them) do every other Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday (but not Sunday) please don't mention it here or Mary Hanafin will be on your doorstep on Wednesday morning!

A very happy Wednesday to you!

Hmmmm If your referring to previous posts of this person and the posts indicate this type of lifestyle, then obviously they are not making an effort, though I disagree with you on using job websites and newspapers, certainly counts as "vying" in my eyes.

If on the other hand your attacking the person for asking a simple question, then your a tosser.

    Hoping its the former one.

Tommy, my attempt at humour was intended for those who put pressure on people who are already in a very difficult situation. Someone earlier in the thread asked for confirmation of what the Social Welfare staff member said about the benefit payment being there on a Friday but also being available on Saturday and Monday and part of one response (yours, as it so happens) was as follows:

Prepared to be jumped on for this unfortunately! Where will you be if you can't collect it on Friday or Saturday (when you should technically be available or looking for work)?...

Why would you give credence to such thinking? People come on this site for information, confirmation and to put their queries. If the Social Welfare, in its wisdom, lets people have three days or so to collect their benefits from the post office, then what on earth right have any of us to put pressure on those people to pick it up on the day. For the love of God, people are not doing time for a crime or out on bail and having to account for their movements on a daily basis. They lost their jobs. And, in my book, those most likely to pick up the few jobs there are out there are those who maintain a bit of balance in their lives, maintain interests, revaluate skills and have the courage to try new things and not be wound tight as a drum and letting anyone or anything be naysayers and passing judgement on what they can do with every hour of their days.

And quit with the name calling. It's not nice!

Good "attempt" alright. I honestly didn't get you were being sarcastic!

Why on earth would you refer back to my earlier comment, it was not meant for you so why bring it up? If you look at my response to you I was in essence agreeing what the point you now say your making (I was even offended by the newspaper and website remark if you'll notice).

I am not passing judgement or a naysayer as you put it. Just keep in mind if people are not looking for work, or gone on a 2 day trip to England, then they are not looking for work, its pretty clear-cut! Being on Sw myself, I certainly have experienced the type of narrow mindedness your talking about so not sure why your getting so wound up yourself!

You should only have taken offence to the name-calling if you fell into the latter part ...

And now for everyone's benefit, back on topic.

I am eager to stay on topic and will do so without any resort to humour which I see can be confusing. My issue was not at all to do with any responses to the person who was going to England for a 2 day trip but rather with the response you gave to the person who wanted to pick up benefit payment from the post office on one of the subsequent available days.

You responded by asking "Where will you be if you can't collect it on Friday or Saturday (when you should technically be available or looking for work)"? Can you ( or anyone else, because, after all, we're all welcome to jump in with comments and info and advice here) supply any official link to support your inference that failure to pick up benefits from the post office on the first available days infers that someone is not available or looking for work?
