I'm from Mervue and I would have considered them rough when I was living there up to 8 years ago. That's just my opinion. They are the closest schools to you but there are a couple more close by too.

There's Scoil Chaitríona in Renmore near the church and Gaelscoil Dara on the Dublin Road.

I was sent to Gaelscoil Dara and I liked it a lot, in fairness that was a long time ago so I don't know for certain but I think it's still a good school, the only thing to think about is that it is a gaelscoil, but it didn't bother me when I was going and neither of my parents spoke the language.

Don't have much info on Scoil Chaitríona but it always seemed like a nice school to me.

    Hope this helps.

They're both mixed sex schools by the way and there's no uniform in Scoil Dara.

I went there myself, hmmm long time ago! But yes it gained the name of being rough in the 90s, then I think setted back down again; most of the kids from the Ballybane/Castlepark area go there as there is no school as such serving that area. I never had a problem in it (twenty years ago mind!).

Scoil Cathriona, though, took the overflow. They have a lot of prefabs but I see they are being replaced with real buildings which is great as it always struck me as a school trying hard with limited resources.

Briarhill is packed out, and have a waiting list because there is no school around. Castlegar? You'd need to drive. I have mixed opinions on Gael Scoil Dara (all irish) down to personal experience . It's a toughie tho especially when they are all so packed up; I suggest you find out which ones have space and work backwards which isn't ideal but might be helpful

Mervue primary, Scoil Na Trionoide Naofa, ah the memories. Sister Rose the 4 foot tall drill sergeant.

From what i remember the schools operates on a co-ed basis up till first class then boys to the boys school and girls to the girls school obviously. It does service a rougher bit of the city alright but of my family 3 of the 4 who went there have gone onto college degrees and never brought the guards to the door as my mother says.

Also Mervue schools are building on fairly sizable extensions at the moment so capacity shouldnt be an issue soon?

I had Sr Rose too even though I only went there for 3 years, 1974-76, Low-Infants, High-Infants and 1st class before we moved out the country. I think I also had a Sr Brid and a Miss Cooney at one point. And I have no idea why I remember these things but Miss Cooney lived near us on Monivea Road and she had a white Ford Escort with a Clare "ZIE" reg.

the 'rough' element are absent from the gaelscolieanna. also fewer foreigners, which may be a plus or negative side.
