I had a problem with a virus and I think it is after corrupting my hard drive, when I try to start the laptop I get the error - a disk read error has occurred press ctrl alt delete

When I put in the recovery disk and restart I get the error - Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready

How can I get the hard drive to work again or get the recovery disk to start? Don't care what I loose on the hard drive

It is an HP compaq nc6000 notebook

    Thanks for any help

Are you sure you don't have any USB pen drives or (floppy) disks inserted? Remover everything but the AC adaptor.

Are you sure there isn't an Operating System Recovery disc as well as the driver recovery disc? If there's more than one: you need the OS Recovery not the driver recovery disc...

It's probably not trying to boot from the recovery CD.
Fix: Go into BIOS (It should say which button at the BIOS splash screen the moment you turn the laptop on, otherwise check the documentation, otherwise try hitting F2, or F1, or DEL as soon as you power on the laptop.
Find option to set Boot Devices/Order. Enable the CD/DVD drive and set it to the top entry.

Go to compaq uk website support ,theres probably a hidden partition on the hd that can restore the os by pressing a button eg f11 at bootup time.OR just restore the os from the windows cd,use the R REPAIR OPTION.
IF that doesnt work reinstall the os from scratch ,but this will probably wipe out much of your data.see here http://www.techimo.com/forum/technical-support/52664-compaq-6000-full-restore-win-xp.html
you should have got a drivers cd plus full recovery /restore windows cdrom if you bought the laptop in a shop as new.
SEE here http://restore-disk.com/restore/free/compaqfree/free-compaq-presario-6000-restore-disk-download.html or contact compaq for replacement restore cdroms .YOU can download drivers from the compaq laptop support website if you need em after reinstalling windows, ie there may be some drivers missing.

Hi, Is this the Black recovery CD that you got with the NC6000 when you purchased the unit ? Is the disk in anyway damaged ?

Can you run a hard disk diagnostic and report the results ?
