Undertaking is illegal and no driver should force any other driver to drive in an illegal or dangerous manner.

even if speed limit on motorway is 120kph what gives them the right to dictate the speed of traffic behind them ????? the garda enforce the law in relation to speeding not some wanker who just sits in that lane doing the speed limit

    Not Your Ornery Onager

The GS will also enforce the law if they see you undertake someone who is doing 120 hm/h!

A little nudge on the back bumper normally works great:D:D.

What I am "on about" is that the drivers who hog the overtaking lane are prompting other drivers to undertake them which is a dangerous maneuver. Yes people are often left little choice but to undertake these twits. All I am getting at is that this behaviour (hogging the overtaking lane) needs to be dealt with through driver education and proper road policing.

    EDIT:
*not the best driving I know*
I normally flash my lights (+ a quick blast of the horn if needed) at them to get their attention that I want to overtake, I normally try this twice and if does not work i will then try to undertake.

You may overtake on the left when
    • You want to go straight ahead when the driver in front of you has moved
out and signalled that they intend to turn right.
    • You have signalled that you intend to turn left.
    • Traffic in both lanes is moving slowly and traffic in the left-hand lane is
moving more quickly than the traffic in the right-hand lane.

Fup all and in my opinion it should be classed as careless driving.

I hate to come up behind a tractor and a lane of traffic meaning those behind are too afraid to overtake meaning I am stuck for however long until the tractor pulls over which can be a long time!

I constantly flash and beep to educate them but to no avail...

This does my nut too. When you have 2 or 3 cyclists abreast or the one cyclist who with every downstroke of there pedals weaves from side to side. jaysus.

Read the various RTAs recently, 2 abreast is maximum legal except when overtaking when 3 is dandy - interesting to learn. :o

As a cyclist and a motorist, I don't view these chappies as cyclists. They're people on bikes and should probably be on the path!

    I hate seeing:
    1. Nobody using there bloody INDICATORS. They are there for a good reason!
    2. Cyclists not going one behind the other and taking up the whole road.
    3. All Taxis (beep like mad and go mental if you don't break the traffic codes like they do just so they can get an extra 2 seconds ahead).
    4. Ones that pull out in front of you at junctions at the last second and cause you to nearly crash.
    5. Ones that pull out of roads unbelievable slow like they are practically wanting you to crash into them!
    6. Severely old people behind the wheel. Yes it is good for them to be independent but not when they haven't a clue about the latest signs and general rules of the road. They blame all the "young" ones while ignoring the fact alot of old ones cause all the minor accidents. (Like not putting the handbrake on while parked on a hill and the car rolls back into another car!)
    7. People who take up two parking spaces arrgghhhh
    8. The majority of northern drivers who race around back roads and main roads and SERIOUSLY endanger the lives of the other motorists
    Ok...think that's a long enough list now:o

OP if you think your story is bad, think about this one. I was on the N25 (same road) about 9 months ago heading towards Cork on the DUAL CARRIAGEWAY section passing Carrigtwohill (before Cobh exit), I was in the overtaking lane (fast lane;)) passing some one out & there was a car coming towards me in my lane!!:eek::eek::eek::eek:
    Now that was scary!
Thankfully I was past the car I was overtaking, I just indicated into the slow lane praying the gobsheen would take the hint. I am not sure what happened after that, I was just glad to be alive!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,828 ✭✭✭Healio

People merging onto a motorway thinking they have right of way. I do normally move over when the overtaking lane is free, but in the morning this is not possible.

I dunno, I think the worst culprits for this are the 307 drivers - it's like theres a sensor in the driver seat that turns on the front fogs when someone sits in it. Very annoying when theres a lot of water on the road and no need for fogs.

I wish they didn't exist at all. Cycle lanes sliced off from an existing carrigeway are a sin in the eyes of God and a blight upon the earth. They annoy me both as a cyclist and a motorist. I think they're really only there for the folk that tootle/weave along at 5 kph, and I can't imagine them being a product of anything other than some righteous numptie in the traffic planning department who uses public transport exclusively.

As an experienced and quick urban cyclist, they are a pain because drivers expect me to cycle in them when I legitimately have the right to use the full width of the carriageway. In many cases it puts me the cyclist into dangerous or disadvantaged positions, where I cannot make progress or end up putting myself and the motorist at risk.

As a motorist they restrict the amount of road I have available and coerce me into taking undesirable road positions (much like the three-abreast mini speed bumps, rotten things!), and often lead to the temptation of overtaking the cyclist at an unsuitable spot.

people who don't understand momentum, and that rain reduces friction between your car and the road, and that on a windy regional road at rush hour you're just a link in a chain and nothing is to be gained by being mere inches behind me.

I've never jammed on without reason but these clowns are almost asking for it.

hate people without their lights on if it's gone crappy weatherwise. I think it's the mentality "we'll it's still daytime"

While undertaking may be illegal, I dont think there is any law against staying in your lane and going faster than someone in the overtaking lane and passing them on the inside. Correct me if I'm wrong

I could write a book here as someone who travels for a living.

    1. Dual Carriageway drivers - people hogging the overtaking lane causing others to do stupid things out of frustration. If the driver behind you is going faster than you are for gods sake let him/her out.
    2. Dual Carriageway drivers - drivers in the other carriageway with their full heads on. It may be the other carriageway but with just a central barrier seperating you does not create a screen preventing the headlights from the blinding you.
    3. Idiots who use rear fog lights when theres no fog and no impairment to visability and equally the opposite when there is poor visability.
    4. One light bandits as I call them. People with headlights out. You never know if its a car or a bike coming towards you and the additional risk of it being a car but not knowing if its drivers side light or passenger side light thats out which could mean the offending bandit may be more on your side of the road than his/hers.
    5. Idiots driving in the rain with no lights on.
    6. Slow drivers - these are more of a risk to other road users than fast drivers. Why? Because out of frustration someone held up behind them will do something stupid which puts the safety of others at risk.
Personally my lights are on approx 80% of the time during the day. Decision being based on the type of day thats in it but I'd rather be seen than not seen.

Theres prob a few more but for now thats all I can think of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭Theta

    That IS undertaking.

Well maybe it is, maybe its not. To me undertaking someone would be if you commit the act of while they were in the same lane as you, you indicated into the left lane passing them out and returned to the right lane otherwise you are just continuing your progression.

I mean its all just semantics really i suppose.

Well what I meant is that I am travelling in the slow lane and someone is travelling at a slower speed in the fast lane. In my progress along the motorway/dual carrigeway I am not going to slow to his speed as I dont not see passing him on the inside as being undertaking as I am not altering my speed to pass him nor am I moving to the slow lane with the specific intention of undertaking. Am I wrong in doing this because if I am then what f*cked up traffic law we have in that I have to slow down because some idiot will not get out of his lane

It's undertaking alright. But it's caused by someone in the wrong, ie someone sitting in the overtaking lane. So it's not that traffic law is messed up, it's because of the idiots sitting in the overtaking lane.

    From a truck
People pulling out in front of you from a side road at the last moment,it's not as easy as you think to get an artic to stop.
Equally these same people turning off 300 yards up the road, the mentality of these people is stupid.
People who crawl across the road in front of you
Micra fog lights, thee most unfocused lights I've come across, luckily I've 8 spotlamps which are a little brighter:)
Tractors with white lights on the back of them at night.
Stupid women drivers on backroads who dont or won't appreciate that on some roads you cant pull near a bank with weight or you'll be in the dyke swimming.Pull in,show a little courtesy and awareness.
Cars who drive up your hole where you can barely see them in any mirror trying to get you to pull over,I've not a problem in the world pulling over when it's safe but these boys will not be getting any courtesy off me.The height of ignorance and just about sums up Irish driving standards.
People parking on the opposite side of the road with there dimmed lights on blinding you, another crowd that get's the full 8 lit up to say hello, use your parking lights, hence the name:mad:.
Twice 2 women on school runs have not paid heed to indicators and ended up with nice marks on their SUV's,pay heed,a left indicator means I intend to turn left.
    On the motorbike
    The white line hogger,inconsiderate buffons.
The goons that weave along the road, you cant be sure whether they are drunk, asleep or whatever.
The drifter on a roundabout, takes every lane and wouldn't even realise if he wiped me out.
The dick stuck 1ft from my back wheel and is too retarded to know how dangerous it is.
The car or van drivers who,in their hatred of seeing a motorbike making progress through traffic,go out of their way to block you.Equally the one's that dont see you at all are as bad.
    Diesel on the road,lethal.

Thats enough of a rant for tonight, that feels good;)

I came across it today and what I hate to see is an "RN" registration because they invariably drive very slowly. Much more than is required. I've experienced this so often and wondered why is it? Do they have cr*p roads in Roscommon or very vigilant and effective traffic corps? Whatever the reason, ther crawl everywhere, without fail. Check it out, it's true!!
