    Hi guys,

I've been having a problem with my laptop for several months now, and I'm hoping someone could A) identify what exactly the problem is, and B) perhaps point me towards a solution. Basically, my DVD drive is having problems with blank or copied CDs and DVDs. There's a couple of issues:

    1. When I play a DVD that has, say, TV programs or movies burnt on to it, it plays them, but if I pause it, it will not resume. The DVD/CD spins around uselessly and the drive makes a kind of constipated whirring sound. I have to eject the DVD/CD and start again.

    2. It often fails to recognise blank CDs/DVDs. I was trying to burn something on to a DVD recently, and when I put in the new blank DVD, nothing registered with my computer. This happened with all of the new DVDs I tried. Also, a few days ago a college technician was trying to install a program on my laptop for me. He had copies of the program on a disk, but when he inserted the CD, my laptop just recognised it as a blank CD. This happened with two different CDs.

The tech guy reckoned it may be a problem with the DVD drivers or something. Does anyone here have a better idea? It's a Sony Vaio VGN-NR11S/S, Windows Vista, about 22 months old, out of warranty and otherwise working fine for its age. This has been happening for a good while, but seems to be getting worse. I really need to get that program put on it, so I really hope somebody can help. Thanks!

Did you try update the drivers?

No, not yet. I wasn't sure how to go about doing that, and didn't want to mess things up further.

Its probably a dirty lens on the drive, you can buy a cleaning CD in your local PC shop for about €5.00

Just go here, theres not too much that can go wrong so give it ago. If that fails try a Disc cleaner and if that does'nt work id look at bringing it back.

Okay, I tried that website, but it redirected me to one where I have to pay for the drivers.

I'll try and get a disc cleaner tomorrow and see how that goes.
