So after being incredibly sick a month ago; http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055695651 Toby is sick again and I'm terrified. He's been out of sorts since we came home from our afternoon walk. He was fine while we were out but became miserable once we got home. He had his post walk biscuit but wasn't too enthusiastic.

I dried him off and set him up in the livingroom. Half an hour ago he was sick and there were huge lumps of raw meat in it, which we didn't feed him. He must have eaten them on the walk though I can't think when. He runs in and out of bushes and but there doesn't seem to have been any point where I couldn't really see him. After throwing up he ran out and had a drink of water, which I'm not sure I should have let him do.

I'm home alone with him, I have no car, and no card as my husband lost his and took mine to work with him today. I'm freaking out. I have extra stomach settling tablets for him which the vet gave me in case he was ill after he was discharged last month. But I don't want to give them to him in case he has eaten something that he should vomit up and the tablets stop that.

He's very, very keen to drink. He keeps going to where I normally keep his bowl and looking at me to get it for him. I gave him a tiny amount and he licked the dry bowl around the room when he'd finished.

When he was in hospital the vet was quite keen for him to drink. But when I check online I get advice telling me not to let him drink in case he further inflames his stomach. Should I give him small amounts every 20 minutes or so as he's very dehydrated and wags his tail whenever he gets a drink.

I would let him drink to be honest as anytime my dog has gotten sick vet always tells me to let him drink as much as he wants to . Hope he is better soon

Can you call the vet and ask them for advice?
    Or an emergency vet?

He has perked up. I rang the emergency vet and they said let him drink as he wants to and give him some maple syrup. He has perked up a lot. He nearly knocked my husband over when he came in, he was so happy to see him.

He's also indicating he wants some food. It will be chicken and rice tonight and tomorrow. And I'll give our own vet a call in the morning. I guess it's one of those instances where I'm extra paranoid because of last month.

I'm annoyed about the meat though. I really didn't think he had an opportunity to eat anything on our walk. Like I said he was in and out of bushes, but he seemed to be hurtling about at top speed the whole time, not stopped to eat anything.

Glad he's feeling better! I'd starve him for tonight and introduce the chicken and rice tomorrow to give his stomach a chance to settle.

If he's getting sick a lot due to eating bad stuff, I'd look into muzzling him when out on walks just to keep him safe. I know of a lot of people with Labs who have to do this. I know there's one area we walk I have to keep a close eye on Jasper due to people dropping food, I wish people wouldn't just throw their old food all over the place!

Yeah, we decided this tonight. He must have practically inhaled that meat if he got at it on our walk.

We're going to keep a very close eye on our garden too, just in case. I don't think any of our neighbours would try to poison them, but maybe the kids at the back threw food over with good intentions? I might have a chat to the neighbours to be on the safe side.

Judging by the kids on our estate, I wouldn't put it past them. One of my neighbours has been given out to by his neighbour because his dog has chewed their kids toys - the only reason the dog was able to chew them was because the kids were throwing them over in an attempt to wind up the dog!

Tbf to the kids at the back they are very nice kids if the meat did come from them it would have been with the best intentions. I'll just have to check the garden before I let the dogs out and watch them while they are outside to be on the safe side.

Toby is just fine today, completely normal, just still a bit hungry. I've had a chat to the vet and he said that if Toby's stomach is still too weak to handle a big lump of meat like that. Especially if he wolfed it down really fast while he was running about. So even if what he ate was fresh and safe he would have been sick. It's even possible Dougal ate some too but was able to keep it down as his stomach isn't weak.

I've gotten them both muzzle straps to wear when they are off lead. They will hate them but it's best to keep them safe for now.

glad hes feeling better ,,,it could just have been a case of a neighbour thinking he'd lob left over meat over the fence rather than throw it in the bin,,had a neighbour like that before who use to throw what ever meat was left over into my dog ,,,had to ask him not to do it any more because my dog would inhale the meat without barley chewing and would then nearly choke . In fairness they went and bought chew sticks in stead for her and she would go out everynight at 7 to get her treat so much so she made a pathway along the grass:rolleyes:

He could well have picked the meat up during his walk. A few months ago someone was putting lumps of out-of-date chicken, sausages etc. by the river. When we eventually caught the person who was leaving the meat, he/she said they were leaving it to feed the foxes. Hope Toby will be ok again soon
