Anyone know why the Breeder's Cup is later this year?

It's later than last year but is not that late overall and has been on in November more often than October.Apparently generally it is to do with where it is being staged and in warm weather area it will be November while in cold weather area such as New York it will be in October.

    Thanks Shan.
I had come to associate it more with the last weekend in October.
What you say about the weather makes a lot of sense.
Whatever the weather, it is one of the greatest meetings of the year and long may it continue!

Absolutely agree.I love the Breeder's Cup and now it is two days it gets better and gives our horses more of a chance with more turf races although the Pro-Ride surface of Santa Anita is in the Europeans favour anyway.

Yes, we really are spoiled these days.
Not long over the Arc, and the Ascot Festival before that, and now one of the highlights of the year coming up.
And some mouth watering jumps meetings on the way with the season just beginning!

I was in Santa Anita a few years ago when it was on there in October and the heat was unreal. I remember Ouija Board being covered in a lather of sweat in the parade ring and I asked Fallon was she ok with the heat. He didn't answer me so I halfed my bet to $250 and she still won!

    She was outstanding.
You don't get many of those in a season!

Goldikova to emulate the great Miesque this weekend by winning back-to-back Mile's. Cant wait - definitely the nap of the meet. Got the coffin draw but she would want to be dead to get beat here.

She will need to be exceptional to emulate Miesque.
That coffin draw won't help but, hopefully, her well charted ability
    will see her through.

lay rip van winkle..long season and noises coming out of o brien yard not great..i think mastercraftmans there no 1 horse over there but very short in the betting.

the part in bold is reason to back it not to lay it imo, its not like O'Brien hasnt done it before ;)

correct! my gut feeling is he may be over the top by now but thats the beauty of betting on horses - they wouldnt bring him over if he wasnt 100%...so you may well be right

O'Briens juveniles are the only ones worth backing this time of the year, all the older horses are always a mile over the top after a hard season, Coolmore like the prestige of having a runner in the big breeders cup races, a pity they does not train them accordingly

Some of O'Briens older horses have run crackers in the BC - think Rock of Gibraltar, Giants Causeway, High Chaparral and Henrythenavigator last year. But for 2 bad rides with ROG and GC they should have joined HC in winning a BC race. O'Brien and Murtagh always believed that RVW was his best horse this year and it would be great to see him win. The yanks will more than likely back Zenyatta which would see RVW drift to 3 or 4 to 1 on US prices.
Alfred Nobel is the pick for the Juvenile.

    Rip for the Classic

    Racing Post:
    Aiden O'Brien

"I was very worried this morning. You could see the journey in him and he's been a little bit quiet the last few days, but as he went round the track this morning I was very happy, as happy as you can be after a slow piece of work. He didn't lose his movement. His foot seems fine.

"We won't really know if the season has taken its toll until he runs, but Rip is a very brilliant horse, probably the most natural athlete we've ever had.

"This horse gives it all. You have to be careful talking about him because the feel you get from him this morning makes you maybe say too much. The feel, the movement that he has.

"This is a very special horse and I have no doubt that we have never before come here with a horse of this calibre. If we can get him to perform close to what he can do, he should give a really good account of himself."

Theres no way I'd lay rip van winkle....no way. If anything I'd just let him run.

How many times though have we hear O'Brien talk utter s**te about his horses. The usual superlatives come out to enhance the horses stud value. Basically what he is saying is RVW is probably the best horse he ever had - next year he will be saying the same thing about Steinbeck and St. Nicholas Abbey, he does it every year.

But ya, I couldnt lay RVW myself - I mean what price would you lay him at that people will take. He is a sure drifter on Sat on the US PMU and the UK prices on him are an absolute joke. Either way it should be a great night's racing though.

The fact that Father time has won on this surface is the only thing swaying me away from Mastery.

Great win for Midday I must say, really battled well.

    Agreed Midday was very good.

Just the Distaff left today and I have a fancy for Proviso.I can see Careless Jewel leading from the start and being collared at about the furlong marker by Proviso who hopefully will show her turn of foot which I believe is superior to the rest of this field.Music Note is classy on dirt but I don't think she possesses the required turn of foot to win on the Pro-Ride surface. If Careless Jewel is allowed too soft a lead she may be hard to beat but it is very unusual to win from the front at Santa Anita.

I was looking forward to this all week, cleared the diary, banished herself, have ATR at home.

But by god its dragging on a bit now.

Insane pace set by Careless Jewel and set the race up for the deep closing Life is Sweet.

2 superstars of the meeting were obviously Goldikova and Zenyatta. It really was a special Classic which had to be the performance of the year. Conduit also deserves credit but it was a pretty poor race - Spanish Moon being second fav illustrates this.

Coolmore had another shocker and have to avoided at all costs in the future - horrible record in the BC.
