Laptop died a slow death

I have been handed a laptop (from a nun), she said that over night it has gotten really really slow, so i figured i would just do a fresh install of XP. The format a partition part took about 12 hours and the HD is only 60gb (i didn't use quick format). Now the fresh XP is installed but its still slow, takes about 10 minutes from turning on till it gets to desktop.

In my limited experience i'm guessing its the hard drive, but was wondering if anyone else could help me out with what i can do to fix it. This nun hasn't much money and wont be able to pay a pro to fix it, i figure i could buy a new 60-100gb hard drive and fit it myself (of course anything i do will be out of my own pocket), but would this be likely to help. The disk format worked ok, so maybe its not the HD.

The computer is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100. Sorry to be so vague.

It does sound alot like a HDD issue but I wouldn't be so sure about that since it formatted ok. Try to reinstall but use a quick format this time and see how it goes. Listen to the harddrive and see if you hear any unusual clicks or odd noises, if you do its likely the HDD has failed. A ram chip may of failed if theres more than one stick of memory installed.
