What was Barry Geraghty thinking of?

He really made an ass of himself at Wetherby on Saturday.
Would have been a dreadful mistake even for a novice.
It certainly didn't look as if he had walked the course, and he didn't sound very convincing in the TV interview afterwards.
I am not talking through my pocket, just shocked that such a "novicey" mistake could be made by such a senior jockey.
In any occupation attention to detail is the hallmark of those who leave no room for error.
    Especially stupid, avoidable errors.
Hopefully Barry will now revert to being the true professional, the real champion, that he is.

I blame the course managers - they need to secure the actual track better

It can often be confusing , and at teh speed that these horses are travelling , there is only a split second to change direction.

But to answer your question 'What was Barry Geraghty thinking of? '' >
Barry would have been concentrating in reaching the finishing line in first place .( head down and going for it )

I reckon he was thinking of what he was going to have for his celebratory dinner for winning the race...Duh

What the hell do you think he was thinking. All jockeys top or novice make mistakes. It happens. He was travelling that well and had decided to kick for home it was impossible for him to alter the course of the horses direction.
The course managers shouldve had that section of course cordoned off so as to prevent such an error.
Again Geraghty is more the blame than anyone as he shouldve had his homework done.He has a holiday now to think bout his inactions :D

I agree 100% with you Whyno.

Geraghty shouldn't have made the mistake but he wasn't helped by the track layout. He is entitled to make a mistake now and again. Thankfully I traded out of his ride just before the turn :p. Still disappointed though.

Gotta agree with the two boys above, everyone makes mistakes. As Barry himself said the ban was harsh but the bad publicity that he got with the race been broadcast on Channel 4 was punishment enough. I had money on My Petra and felt that he had a good chance of taking the spoils, travelling very well....not to be though, thankfully PP refunded my stake.

I didn't have any money on the race, but I thought that he got off lightly at 12 days.
As you say, the race being shown on Channel 4 was another punishment that has to be taken into account.
That was very generous of PP to refund your money.
    Well done him.
Looked like you might have been on a winner, though, but who knows?

12 days was far too harsh. The blame should lie 50% with the jockey and 50% with the racecourse. There should have been a railing runing all the way around and when an incident like this happens the racecourse should take responsibility. The stewards in Weatherby were an absolute disgrce.

Another incident involving Ruby Walsh occured in Stratford a couple of years ago following the placement of the water jump next to the finish. Anybody could see the stupidity of this at a time when the BHA were trying to phase out water jumps.

Barry is now saying that he is on holiday thanks to the Wetherby stewards.
Surely it is thanks, in part at least, to himself?
