check out EiremanX in Courtown Co Wexford
Sea swim / forest bike (MTB) / forest run
bike and run both involve several river crossings
was run in both May and Sept this year and I think the plan is to do the same again in 2010
I did it in Sept and it is absolutely brilliant craic
Most of the people I was talking to on the day had done it in May as well
    www.eireman.org
    don't bring your good gear!!

Quite a few will have trails/grass runs... I did Kilcock and Eireman (both sprints) this year and both were trails/grass.

    Edit: thats eireman, not eireman-x

Lough Key Sprint is in a forest/trail, usually in September:

    Disclaimer - I'm a runner, not a triathlete.

I'm not sure what to make of this question.

You say 'start triathlons', are you training for something else at the moment?

If you knees aren't up to taking on the road section of a triathlon race, say 10km, then I'm not sure triathlon is the sport for you at all.

A reasonable amount of the triathlon training must be running, I guess.
So if you did all the training on grass, to lessen the impact, surely you could make through the race section on road.

Depending on the time of year etc, I might do 50% of my running training on grass, even if my kness, so far, are in good nick.

kilmore tri club run the 'blacksod' olympic dist. this is part, road part grass/sand,
also liquid motions sprint, 'salmon run' in Ballina is also part road, part woodland.
think there are very few that are all of road, but i'm sure if you train off road, then running a few k on tarmac for a race wiil do no harm,
have the the same problem myself, but do all my training off road and most of my racing on tarmac, still had a good season.

Tramore has an annual sprint tri (usually around early\mid August) and the run is on the beach.

Thank you very much for all the information everyone... very helpful.

Aburke... you make a good point there ..I could handle a 5km road run no problem ... just seem to get shin splints from road runs but have no problems on grass/sand.. also find that flexibility is inhibited more from road running... lower back, hips etc.. do alot of surfing so need to stay flexible.. just think If I can avoid road running I am better off but still it won't put me off doing 5km road run for sprint triathlons..

Do you find the road running is higher impact and has a longer recovery period than the grass ?

Thanks again everyone for taking the time.
    Steve.
