    http://www.sophie-appeal.org/

I only just seen this story on the news tonight and its a gut wrencher.

To see a child with such an agressive form of cancer is sickening but to see that a treatment could give her a great shout at survival is brilliant.

The story really hit me as I've just been told I've a tumor so I know for sure I'd want every treatment no matter what the cost.

For me it's definately worth foregoing a few pints or something else of little importance!!

Edit: Sorry if it's out of place in AH but was with the amount of people here I thought it'd have a better impact here.

I'm really sorry to hear about your tumor, dude. I hope everything works out for you x

Ok, I've NEVER donated to any of these things, but I just gave £10 there. That child has 9 days left to get the treatment, if she doesn't she's effectively dead. I don't know her or the family but I wanted to do something to help.

Donate the price of a pint.

I'll admit I'm a bit of a sucker for appeals like these but I'd never suggest others do but this one just really hit a note.

Did you notice what was the latest total as you donated? The site's total is behind, there was nearly 400k when I seen. I think it said they need 500k stg on the news.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭Elessar

Yeah it was at £409k iirc.

    Mod edit:

Cancer has hit many families, so it would be nice if this was kept on topic.

    No Jokes please!

/I know you can do it..

I wasn't joking, just pointing out to Keira that the tumour is not Mad max's but Sophie's.

I also note my post was deleted for what reason is beyond me.

For the dummies/drunks here, I have online banking but how do I donate to this cause? I'm ready to do so if I get the right details.

I don't think so, I think thats only for treatments with long waiting lists here. Things like this really should be though imo!

No, if you read up it's a new treatment on clinical trials that is ONLY available in a hospital in New York.

£412,024 now. I've added a little to it. Poor thing. You can donate through paypal in case anyone is interested.

You can see the current figure here

That is only for Irish citizens.

The girl in question is an English citizen, and so is taken care of by the English Health Service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,322 ✭✭✭Mad_Max

I think it was reported on the news that the total was in the region of 350k. If I heard that right, it's some jump in a few hours.

Just going to throw this out there, but if a student wiht a 6000 euro loan (and much more on the way) can donate something then you can afford a few quid. It doesn't have to be a big deal, just a little bit.

That's amazing that in the space of 10 mins the amount is up c500 pounds aand even more so considering it's late at night. I hope it keeps going.

Ach, I know that, but that level will be raised for that girl, if enough publicity is raised.

How much would your operation cost?

It states it costs in excess of $500,000

Going by currency converter - works out about £302,662

I hope so, I am fed up with comments about " It's only After Hours ".

The people who post in AHs are well capable of taking on a serious topic.

Hey, there is an opportunity here to show how the internet can help people.

Your good self raised it on this thread.

I think this thread could be used in a similar vein, except about yourself.

Whether you accept that this thread could save your life is up to you!

i dont understand why they should need the 500k?

Surely if a child or anybody with such a terrible disease who will die unless the treatment is given to them, should get this treatment regardless of cost.

i cant understand someone in some office saying: " sorry tough luck, you only got $475k, sorry bout your daughter but we need $500k"

when there is a child's life on the line and the potential to save it. expense should be an afterthought for the family, (God knows they are already going through a difficult time). not the difference between life and death.

Would say part of it is that the treatment they require now for their child is only available in New York.

Maybe if it was available in the UK, there might not be any need to raise any funds.

    Meanwhile, in the real world.....

People seem to think that government resources are infinate. They aren't.
Money spent on one person is money not spent on another.
All healthcare systems have some form of rationing, whether it be by waiting list, or denial of treatment, because there are limited resources.
500k spent on one person could mean multiple treatments being denied to many others.

well look, il give you a scenario then from the real world then. a parent brings a kid into a hospital say tallaght. kid has the exact same symptoms as Sophie. family doesn't have health insurance or much money. does the hospital treat them?

im genuinely asking this question and trust me ive been in my fair share of hospitals but my family are lucky to be covered by health insurance so this issue was never raised.
