Returning PS3 to shop

I bought my PS3 console in December 2007 and hadn't had any problems until about 6 months ago when i noticed the graphics suddenly went crap. The in-game graphics are all fuzzy and pixelated and they remind me more of upgraded PS2 graphics than the clear HD picture i used to see. I've checked everything. I replaced the HDMI cable, reset the HDTV, restored to the default PS3 settings, made sure all the settings were okay (display set to HDMI 720p etc.), left the PS3 off for the night to cool down, formated the harddrive, tried it on other tvs (SDTVs) and nothing worked so it must be something to do with the console itself.

I'm not sure if its still under warranty because some people are saying its only a one year warranty while others are saying its longer so i'm a bit

If i brought it back to Gamestop with the receipt what would they do?
Would they replace it right away or send it off for repair?

Someone threw out the original box (:() so would i have to provide my own box, would that be a problem?
And if your bringing it back do you have to give back the original cables and controller?

thanks and sorry for all the questions :o:)

First things first, ring Sony on 0818 365065 (lines open til 10pm) and see what their advice is.

    Next your questions....

    (1) Unfortunately you are out of warranty. PS3's only come with a one year warranty as standard.

    (2) If you brought it back to Gamestop then they will probably tell you the same thing Sony will, ie. give them €160 and they will give you a refurbished model/replacement.

    (3) No it shouldn't be a problem as they will simply put the refurb/replacement in said box.

    (4) No you don't have to bring your cables or controller. If you do, they should simply put them back in the box with your refurb/replacement.

Hope this helps, and I'm sorry for your loss. I've been there myself

Try this. Worked for me when Dell were trying to charge my sister 300e for a replacement part for a screen!

I think a machine that was 400e when you got it should last more than one year.

    Great chrislad,

Thanks for that. Just got a blu ray of death on my cousins ps3 that was bought in zavvi 14 months ago. Needless to say they are gone bust. Rang Sony's helpline and they said they would send me instructions in a couple of days. If its money they are looking for then ill send that back to them.
    Thanks again,
    Ed

Has anyone tried this at Gamestop?

I'm not sure if i should be contacting Gamestop or Sony, which would be less hassle?

That EU law has cropped up on several occasions, but as pointed out to each time it comes up, Ireland did not sign up to this law, therefore it does not come into force over here.

If however, you purchased your console in the UK, then you could fight your case.

You can give out stink to Sony like I did about the law but they will come back with the same answer that Ireland didn't sign up to it.

Jesus, not again. Ireland DID NOT SIGN UP to the directive, believing that our Sales of Goods Act provides greater protection than the 2 year warranty. If you can get figures on Blu-Ray failure, you may have a case against the seller for up to 6 years as a known fault with the product. however, the graphics issue is the first I've heard of, so it may not be possible to go down this route. Again the Sale of Goods Act says the product must be fit for the purpose intended for a "reasonable period of time".

Might be worth keeping an eye on this.....
