I have had the phone for a month on contract to O2. I tried sending some picture messages abroad, but got a failed error message. I spoke with O2 (and what a shenanigan it was to actually talk to someone, who would have thought my old service provider Vodafone were so user friendly in comparison?).

I got some nonsense speech about how difficult it was to send MMS abroad and how different networks could easily loose the message  But eventually he said that he would "check the system" and I was to power off the phone for 5 mins. I did this and no change whatsoever.

Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

You can not send MMS internationally from any Irish operator using any phone.

Care to explain how I have been doing it with a cheap nokia on vodafone and been receiving them from several friends abroad?

I'm afraid it's case of if it works it works if not there is nothing that can be done to make them work. Irish networks will only guarantee picture messages to other Irish mobiles so as longas that is working then there is nothing that can be done. You can send it to an email address if you wanted instead of a mobile number and it will send.
