    Hey There!

I need to buy an external hard drive for my laptop, and I'm not sure what I need to look out for, can you help?

I only need it for music and photos, I wouldn't be downloading movies or really big files.

I saw a Toshiba 250gb one on ebay for €65, is that good or bad? It has a RPM speed thing of 5400.

    Thanks a mill!

    There are generally two types...

    3.5" external http://www.ebuyer.com/search?store=2&cat=4&subcat=128
    +
    2.5" portable http://www.ebuyer.com/search?store=2&cat=4&subcat=1813

The 3.5" drives are much cheaper and can hold much more, but require a power supply, which needs to be plugged in everytime it's used.

The 2.5" portable drives are more expensive and cannot hold as much per euro. However true to their name they do not require their own power supply and just run from a usb port.

There is a 1tb external hd in Easons on Talbot street, dublin for only €79.
    For portable

stay away from the Maxtor Basic 1tb. It's very cheap in a number of places but it has a life expectancy of about 2 seconds.
