Big civilization fan and civ 3 and 4 are the only games i really play. Any recomendations for other similar turn based strategy games? Getting a new laptop and want to make sure it'll be good enough for any game i might want to get.

I'd say you'd enjoy the Galactic Civilizations series a lot more than Sins of a Solar Empire or the Total War series.

Is there anything more earth based, prefer the whole historical backdrop of civ then something set in science fiction.

I found Rome Total War a really interesting game to play if you're in to the history side of things. Also the Medieval 2 - Total War was very good - esp with the amount of mods available to maps and countries available. Haven't tried the latest one Empire but there are meant to be lots of bugs with it still as far as I know?

Empire: Total War has had a series of patches in uncharacteristically rapid succession for Creative Assembly, which fixed a great deal of the bugs.

I have to say i love all of these

    Civ and Total war series

sins was quite good but a bit boring eventually

have you played Alpha Centauri? it takes place after events of Civ

quite good and from same people as Civ

Yeah ive played alpha centauri alright. I reckon i might give one of the total war series a go. I remember reading a thread some time back that started off on civilization but went onto some other game that had loads of real world nations. I remember you could play as Ireland but that it was next to impossible to win then. A shot in the dark, im sure, but anyone know what game im talking about? Remember thinking that whenever i upgraded computer id have to give it a try.

There was a Medieval 2: Total War add-on, Kingdoms, that included Ireland as a faction of the British Isles campaign.

Have a look at Hearts of Iron 3.
I recently started playing it and its simply amazing.
Basically a complete simulation of all of WW2.

Europa Universalis (of which III is the most recent):

It's "real-time", as opposed to turn-based. Game starts in mid 15 century (1450's IIRC), and you can control any nation (incl., as you mentioned, Ireland - though in II they start as separate Provinces rather than a united nation).
