Fashion faux pas

"Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months"

Oscar Wilde said this and I would have to agree with him. When it comes to fashion I just do my own thing, I am almost unaware of what's in now. I do know people(teens) who follow it like the pope follows religion, it is their lives and other stuff just fills the gaps. I also know people who know what's in and follows a fair bit of it but also does a bit of there own thing.

Looking at these people I feel like an outsider but, this gives me a great oppertunity to see how awful some of the current fashion looks. Since the seasons changing I haven't noticed to much lately but in the past I've noticed things like day-glo colours (I think this one is still a bit strong), bright blue eyeliner+mascara, short shorts in the middle of winter (bare legs too)

At the moment I can't think of anything I did that was awful, I normally just dress casual or wrap dress(with my curves wrap dresses are brilliant) + boots. When/if I do think of something I'll post it.

What fashionable things, hair, make-up, clothes do you think are/were just utterly awful? Also please excuse the 80's but not the 80's comeback.

Liquid eyeliner worn very thickly across the eye and halfway across the temples.

You don't look cool. You don't look unique. You look like you are trying to copy Amy Winehouse, and you look ridiculous.

Socks with pumps. It just really pisses me off.

Quiff in hair. Don't see it that much anymore, but jaysus almighty, the state!!

Oh and Uggs. Especially when they're worn with trackies.

    Harem pants- bleurgh.

Crop tops- 99.9999% of women look godawful in them.

Thigh high boots- just impossible to not look slutty in them and can't really be worn casually.

That's all I can think of for now! :D

When I was 11/12: ski pants worn with bright pink slouch socks/leg warmer type things over them.........complete with a navy/white polka dot silky hairband........ Seemingly they're all fashionable again now though!!

Parachute Pants, you know the ones that had all the random strings coming out of them? I think some people called them octopus pants. They were popular about 10 years ago (for kids but still)

A lot of the 90's fashion was pretty bad as well now that I think of it. Seeing some of the stuff my mum dressed me in is just embarrassing.

where do i start!! for one has anyone else noticed all southside girls ranging from 15 - 21 pretty much look identical.....badly backcombed hair, trackies with ugg, FAR too much make-up/face tan and an abercrombie/hollister hoddie hanging off them!!! Its a real pet peeve of mine!!!
Anyways anyone remember paralells worn with palladiums.......i was a victim! cringe!!!

I also nearly cry when i think of what i wore in first year college, i had a white boob tube (literally only covered the boobs) and a pair of dark blue flared trousers purchased from extrovert in stephens green........i wore this outfit religiously luckily i had the stomach to pull it off back then but oh god when i look at pictures! AHHHH

Also hate hate hate day-glo coloured anything! it very 80's and should have been left there! It hurts my eyes when i see people walking towards me!

I have an acute hatred of anyone who doesn't know how to put on their make-up properly and effectively!!!

    Orange faces make me sick:(
    Bright Obnoxious colours annoy me!!!

Why would ANYONE wear an illuminous yellow Boobtube???? Why?

I am straight, but I could dress alot of girls better than they can themselves!!!

I know, to each their own and all that, but these people need help!!!

I went through a phase of dressing like a boy. I even used to wear boxers.

I actually shuddered reading that. You just described my childhood! The shaaame...

I was worried nobody would know what the hell I was talking about.

    I thought of another one.
Crocs. How the hell did a hideous looking rubber clog with plastic decorations you can buy become so popular?! I don't care how comfy they are, they look ridiculous.

Anyone remember the catastrophe that were 'jelly shoes'? The nasty plastic yokes that came in different colours, had little heels on them and were apparently cool for a good five seconds when I was about 12.

Or tear-aways? Jaysus they rocked my sad, pathetic world for another few seconds as a teenager.

I also bought, and unfortunately wore, quite a bit...a faux sheep skin winter coat a good few years back. Fluffy and tacky as fvck. I saw Claudia Schiffer wearing something similar in some class of an ad, but unfortunately I'm not Claudia Schiffer and looked like a midget polar bear for a good few winters thanks to that one.

The perm wasn't such a great idea either in hindsight, although I wasn't the only eejit who fell for that one so at least I don't stand out in the photos...

Ah, but what's adolescence all about, if not to blindly follow fashion trends with an embarrassing disregard for body type or self respect.

If I was a teenager now I've no doubt I'd be wearing those ridiculous wet-look leggings with uggs, a hair quiff and some radioactive-coloured eyeliner.

    Treasure the memories! :D

    • Ugg boots
    • luminous coloured anything, make-up, clothes, shoes whatever!
    • fat man pants on both men and women
    • PJ's in public!--thats new
    • Orange make-up
    • fake tan
    • white tracksuit / runners
    • baseball hats angled off the head
I'm a typical Irish girl with pale skin and fair hair so I don't try to be darker by wearing orange make-up, I find maxfactor seamless porcelain foundation very good. My own personal taste in every day fashion would be pumps, skinny jeans, polo neck, sleeveless open end jumper and a baker boy hat.

Heres just a few of mine:

Pyjamas worn out when you should be dressed!
Orange make up/tan why oh why would you do it??
    Pumps with white socks!
Back combed hair that looks like you just crawled out of bed.
Hoola Hoop ear-rings a tiger could jump through.
Badly coloured orange hair to follow the orange make up/tan
When everything co-ordinates like brown boots/tights/skirt.t-shirt/jumper/jacket/scarf and hand bag! - saw this one the other day looked kinda odd, add a bit of colour :)

    Thats it for now :)

Just goes to prove that style and fashion are two different things ;)

I couldn't care less about what's in fashion tbh, I'll only wear what suits me. One thing I like at the moment is the tulip-ey shaped skirts, they make me look as though I have a waist!

I also don't do fake tan, ever. This is a fact that some of my friends genuinely can't get their heads around. It's not automatically better than paleness, genius! I'm a very pale redhead ffs, surely anyone can see that fake tan would be horrendous! Hair matching face = sexay

I think I'm constantly having fashion faux pas moments.
I'll look at photos of myself from a few months previous and think I looked awful, despite remembering feeling great, when the photo was taken!
    :o

I wore a lot of awful clothes when I was younger. Lime green leggings come to mind! I also wore those Adidas 'popper' trousers ... the ones with buttons on the side you could just rip off... Oh dear!

Current trends I don't like ... neon clothing. I don't think it particularly flatters anyone's skin tone! Not a fan of those gillet things either ... People look like a fisherman in them! And wet-look leggings - I'm wearing a pair myself tonight, as part of my Hallween costume, but my God, they are seriously hard to pull off and quite unflattering, I think!

Tracksuit bottoms / jeans tucked into socks.
    Ugg boots
    Excessive make-up

For about 2 years I lived in a pair of lavender polyester elephant flares with some manner of dress or skirt and a massive hoodie over them. On a few occasions this skirt was a sorta mid calf length maxi skirt made of black cord. I looked like a black and purple shuttlecock.

For ages and ages when I was a nipper (14-16) I had this eyeliner pencil that was like a crayon with silver on one end and baby blue on the other end. No other makeup, just either silver on top and blue under my eye or vice versa. Teamed with no other makeup, bad skin and a straggly monobrow I was rarely bothered to pluck I looked an absolute treat :D

In my facist fantasies fake tan would be banned. It's a public offense.

Well my childhood and early teens just consisted in one fashion disaster after another, as I just didn't care, I had no interest whatsoever in my clothes so just wore whatever mother bought me. Some of the photos are really cringeworthy, seriously I don't know what she was thinking! I do remember wearing a red Lion King tracksuit when I was twelve ... definitely old enough to know better! :o

Then in my early teens I started taking a very slight interest in shopping ... some of my early mistakes included tight white Pepe jeans, really tight shiny navy "hipsters" worn with Sketchers, and a lime-green puffy bomber jacket type thing worn over my bright blue school uniform, yuck!

Then there was my rocker phase, where I lived in Vans, massive baggy jeans, hoodies, and had the ends of my hair dyed bright red ... I don't regret the hair bit, I still think I looked awesome! :D I probably looked like a boy though, specially since I was hanging out with all boys at the time.

Then for a while I lived in those baggy Nope trousers, I had a few pairs in different colours, and a string top. All. The. Time.

When I was 17-18, I had a selection of denim miniskirts in various shades and styles that I always always wore going out, along with these really plasticy looking black knee boots, yuck! Actually I went through a stage of dressing fairly slutty all the time around then, definitely don't regret it, I was young enough and had the body to get away with it.

And now I still have plenty of fashion faux pas, but I don't really mind ... looking at the photos is a bit cringey at times, but as long as I felt fabulous at the time, isn't that the main thing!

There are lots of fashions that were hideous - shoulder pads & perms to name but two - but the worse faux pas have to be people who wear the fashions and either ignore or are blind to the fact the particular fashion just doesn't suit them/anyone. Big girls wearing leggings & short tops, baggy jeans on very skinny people, women staggering around in 5 inch heels, badly applied eye-liner, fake tan applied badly, obviously cheap repro's, etc, etc....

I depsise girls in matching tracksuits unless they're in the gym or something, out on the street...I just no and then combined with those large gold hoop earrings?

Maybe I'm too much of a girl to dress like that.

oh god...even thinking about what i wore as a kid makes me sick.

i remember for my confirmation i thought i was so cool cuz i had baby blue sketchers platforms. proper 1960s platforms.

really really bright blue eyeshadow but no other makeup.

loads and loads of o neill's tracksuit bottoms.

    huge flares from eager beaver.

patchwork denim jeans with a matching jacket that were always worn together....

i had a pair of those stringy parachute pants too.:eek::eek:

I was dressed in really cool clothes when I was a kid mostly, thanks Mum!

    I hate:

    Ugg boots.
    Quilted bags.
    Hoopy earrings.
    Those sequin jackets.
    Most sneakers.
    Fake tan in general.
    Orangey make-up.
    Really thin eyebrows.

this i have to disagree with, i absolutely love quilted bags, especially with a long strap.

i can understand your hatred tho, now that they're the in thing and penneys have a crap version, everyone has one on their shoulder.

i love going to shops like the harlequin and finding a lovely vintage quilted bag, but the dream is to have one of these one day!

Oh most people I know love them. It's pretty strange that I don't like them really. They are considered classical and all that. But I just...don't like them.
