thoughts on college road?

Im thinking of going to UCC but am confused about accomodation. i went to visit my friends over mid term and it seemed the ones staying in a house of 8 people in college road were having a much better time then many of my friends staying in student accomadation. maybe just because its still early days but in houses its girls and boys aswell and just more freedom for parties and such?
so thoughts on a freshman thinking of living on college road?
    bad idea/good idea?

Go to college road if you want non stop partying and general lautish behaviour, but if you want to actually get a decent nights sleep/have some chance of succeeding in university, avoid it by the plague.

There was an editorial in this weeks UCC Express, and the author mentioned having something different thrown at her on college road for the last 4 years. My favourite was a "bag of compost".

Someone told me last week that since start of term, 6 girls have been raped on college road. Can anyone confirm this?

I seriously doubt that. Surely it would have made some sort of media coverage by now. 6 in one area would be national news.

That's what I thought, I'd imagine that the word "raped" need be taken with a pinch of a salt. It was more than likely 6 girls who woke up hungover and regretting the night before.

My thoughts? Avoid it! You can still enjoy the social side of UCC without living in a cesspit.

    it depends..
student accomodation is way better for making friends, better security, way better standard of living

houses are cheaper but ucc ones tend not to be great, liveable but nothin fancy. you do worry about security and stuff, cos u hear of all these break ins.
if your a first year i definately recomend student accomodation..iv lived in both...trust me

I live in Castlewhite. Walls are well insulated enough that you can't hear a thing and, despite its reputation, its actually great. The staff fix any problems you have usually on the same day. The beds are double-beds, which is useful and they are very comfortable.

Great place to live, really. Can roll out of college at 9 and be in on time for my 9 o clock lecture too. I'll definitely be here next year !

+1 on the "avoid College Road if you want decent nights" part.

A friend of mine was living there... never seen a dirtier house before. And everyone just goes there for parties, so don't think you'll be able to study correctly when needed.

I lived there last year and it was okay, it's a lot of fun and it's not non-stop partying all the time. I mean the big events (fresher's week, CIT christmas day, halloween, rag week, paddy's day) are a bit like the love child of an orgy, a horror movie, a piss up and a riot, but generally it's no worse than anywhere else. Though I did have a bedroom on the top floor.

It is a lot better in terms of freedom as well, no having to deal with receptionists/security guards etc, and you can have people over etc.

I've lived there or abouts for 3 years. Back again this year but off one the side roads. I find the place okay. As above, it's only the main nights that are a bit crazy (People burning furniture etc in their lawn) but besides that it's fine.

Never lived in student accomodation and never will. A house is a lot more homely.

I find the Castlewhite staff very slow to respond to requests. I'm still waiting on them to repair broken lights, plumling Etc from September.

In general I would recommend student accommodation or digs for first year . Their is far less domestic issues to worry about then in a house. Which leaves more time for study or socializing. It really depends on who you live with more then where you live.

I got 3 lights fixed the same day...all you have to do is go down and complain ! I find some students aren't very forceful. Just go down with the attitude of "I'm paying 3 and a half grand a year for this...might as well get my money's worth".

Got a microwave fixed and had a maintenance guy try to fix our oven before, same day and all. Microwave wouldn't fix so they bought us a new one that day and all ! :)

just becasue the house is on college road doesnt nescessarily mean the house will be dirty, i have seen some nasty ass houses much further from campus that college road. and also if you need to study hard its not like you are far from the library! :D but seriously.... wouldnt reccomend living in a house in first year unless you have your head screwed on and will actually be able to take care of yourself and not go off the rails. i have seen it happen to so many people because they have such freedom. at least in student accomadation, there is a little less freedom. ish.

I know, it's not exactly what I meant. But I remember my friend's house was dirty because of the parties. At first, they were cleaning but soon gave up because people always ended in their house no matter what (even people they didn't know). The mirror in the bathroom was broken and so was a door which ended up on the floor.
I also know the library is not too far away. But I know I like to study at home too and that it becomes impossible with people partying downstairs. :D

As for Castlewhite, never had problems with the staff. But they had also told us they were quite satisfied with us because our appartment was the cleanest one and usually the one they showed to people wanting to rent a room. Go and insist if needed but be nice and polite. ;)
