Or do you mean marketing of a film, like the one for Cloverfield?

District 9's was great, so was Cloverfield and The Dark Knight's viral campaigns, Blair Witch was one of the most influential.

Marketing of a movie. Not product placement in the film.

Snakes on a plane, wasn't a great movie but it got most of its following off the net. ;)

Borat also got hyped a fair bit with his public appearances.

Maybe I'm totally and completely wrong here; but didnt they close off small parts of footpaths in places around london for a few hours here and there with 'Quarantine' tape, and have bloodstains and bloddy handprints on the walls and stuff in the run up to 28 Days Later?

Seems like a great way to promote a film. People love seeing something that's closed off. They always want to know what's going on.

But yeah... Dunno if that's what you meant or not.
