    Hi,
I want to go to a European music festival this summer - something along the lines of Oxegen or Electric Picnic.. Have been to Sziget before & loved it but was wondering where else is good..? Any suggestions would be great.. Thanks

Threads will start appearing over the enxt few months, the main ones will be Rock Am Ring, Rock Werchter, Glastonbury, Lowlands, Pukkelpop, and some others.

My own suggestion would be Rock Werchter if your looking for a kinda Ozegen/EP style, it would have most of same bands, except nowhere as many. Two stages, 4 days, mainly good weather....great altogether. In saying that, it is one of the more expensive mainland festivals, but still worth it.

I usually volunteer at Leeds but thinking about going on a road trip across europe. Either Sziget(only heard good things about it) or Nova Rock(went a few years ago and it was the best festival I have ever been to)

I went to Rock Im Park this year and loved it . More on the heavy rock but you still got bands like The Killers , The Script ,Basement Jaxx , The Kooks etc this year. Hoping to go again next year . For my flights + RIP tickets it was about the same price as Oxegen but way more enjoyable

Rock Wertcher has quality and hardly no filler. Look at last years line up sure it was class.I think €170 for 4 days is a bargain. Ill probably be going myself to it next year.

Glastonbury is always amazing of course though you've always the chance of a wash out which can make it alot tougher. Can't make it this year myself unfortunately.

Primavera in Barcelona has got more and more popular in recent years though its a bit niche covering lesser known bands of the midweek Whelans/Crawdaddy calibre for the most part. I love that sort of thing but you mileage may vary.

As for Oxegen alternatives having been to Reading, Leeds, Roskilde, Rock Werchter and Sziget I think Roskilde wins hands down across the board.

Rock Werchter is Roskilde lite and had one of the most dead crowds and lacked anything non music wise.

I honestly didn't see the attraction of Sziget which had a frankly awful lineup (ok I did see the attraction... women and cheap booze but lets keep it on the music level :D).

I felt Reading and Leeds both were starting to become too much like the UK Oxegen the last time I was there 2003/04. Bunking in after your a-levels is pretty much right of passage stuf now so just scores of drunk 16yr olds looking to nick your beer. I understand that a lot of this sort of crowd has relocated to Benicassim in recent years though but thats just hearsay.

Roskilde even though it was filthy and rather expensive for a Euro festival had an atmosphere that was fun and wild but never felt dangerous. It has a wide selection of things to do for the week, everyone is amazingly friendly, the lineup is usually the same as Rock Werchter but with a LOAD of extra stuff. Sound, organisation etc is top notch. As I cant make Glastonbury this year I'll more than likely go to this as the alternative.

I'd say Pukkelpop will by my new festival next year and possibly replace Electric Picnic after this years dismal showing unless there is much evidence of change on the horizon. I may also hit up End of the Road festival in the UK which is a sort of folky/indie festival set in the fields of some stately gardens. Abit like a higher profile Castlepalooza from what I can gather. Sterling being so weak will certainly mean the Irish festivals will need to pull their fingers out to compete next year.

I really enjoyed Rock Werchter when I went in 2005 but the lineup is generally naff unless you are interested in seeing big names and the latest flavours of the month. There's little or no side activities, but it's a good festival if you just want to hang around for the craic or festival buzz.

I'd like to check out Sziget but Pukkelpop always wins out on the lineup, and the acts lined up for Sziget was pretty abysmal this year. You could do both, but it's tight as Pukkelpop starts when Sziget wraps up.

Pukkelpop is probably my favourite festival. It's relatively cheap to do and the lineup has a mix of everything.

I know, was there 07, was sweet. Don't forget though, ya have to buy camping ticket separate, so its closer to €190

I went to Primavera in 2007 and 2009. It's a great festival and usually has an awesome line up

Might be going again next year but it depends on the line up (Pavement confirmed so far but no one else). Think I'll give Sonar a go instead. It's on in the same venue a few weeks later.

Sonar is stunning! One of the best weekends I've ever had!

Saw an ad for this when I was over in Budapest this summer. It's on Lake Balaton, looks like Sziget except with an amazing line-up. It's more orientated at electronic music, but the line-up is getting better and broader each year. I'd look out for it this year, might head to it myself. Otherwise I'd probably substitute EP for Bestival, seems like EP's bigger, better brother.

I'll be doing a ton of music fests next year with the best mate, going along in a camper van! :) I did oxegen and electric picnic this year, thought oxegen was ok but LOVED electric picnic, way better!
So i'll be making the trip to glastonbury, i'm pretty sure it's along the same ways as electric picnic but way way bigger scale!
Thinking of sziget also, and already have my ticket to the melt! festival in Germany! The line up for me was really good this year, kinda like a electronic dance/rock vibe!
90 euro for 3 days!
