I think finding a company to insure after a drink driving conviction will be difficult enough without also trying to find one who will do it cheaply.
However as far as a I'm aware an insurance company is obliged to quote you, even if the quote is so obscenely high as to border on the insane.
Don't hold me to that though, as the rules may have changed recently.

Your best bet would be to start on somewhere like 123.ie and put in a fake name and leave out your conviction first just to see what effect it has on your premiums.

Keep us posted on how you get on :)

I know somebody who was in this situation. 2 year disqualification for driving under the influence. They got insured with Quinn Direct (surprisingly reasonably I thought)

I thought this was the case too until recently me and the better half got a nice car and most companys would not ensure me even as a named driver. I am 24 yo with a full licence almost 3 years and no claims. We ended up going with the insurer who we were with previously and no problems. Was just strange when shopping around no one would quote us bcause of my age.

Also was in papers a few months ago that Quinn will not insure in Tallaght anymore. Unsure how true this is

What an insurance company will usually say is 'We have no interest in insuring you at this time'
which most people translate as 'we won't insure you'

However if you push them they will give you a figure which is so outlandish that no normal person would accept it.

I did hear an anecdote a few years ago where someone pushed a company like that and the company responded that they wanted 15K, and he paid it. Of course could be a load of what horses produce but sounded funny at the time :)

What favour do you think you are doing the OP? Firstly the OP has a situation and you want to compound it by suggesting he misrepresent his circumstances to an insurer. You are doing him no favours and should keep your opinion to yourself

If you read what I suggested I said to put in fake details FIRST, to see what affect the conviction was going to have when he put in his REAL details with the conviction added.

This way when he gets in touch with an insurer on the phone and they tell him that his conviction will have no affect on his premium, he's already got proof that it does/doesn't.

 I would have thought an insurer would make no attempt to hide the fact that the conviction is going to have an impact on his premiums?

OP, I'm moving this to the 'Motors' forum, I think it might suit your query a bit better. :)

That's fairly expensive. Are those typical prices if you were put off the road? What was your insurance before hand?

I dont think this was related to your age. Im 24, 2 years no claims, full license and ive no problem getting a quote on a 1.6 Renault Laguna. What car is it? They dont like words like Subaru, turbo, bigger than 1.8L, alteza, GTI, GT, etc...

I had an endorsement in the past for driving without insurance... I drove a bike when I was 16 and the insurance was out by 3 days when I got knocked down by an old woman driving a car. It kept me off the roads for 6 years because I didnt know that unless its on a valid license it does not run, i.e. I got it stamped onto a 2 yr provisional and put the license away because I didnt want to think about it. The licence expired and 6 months later I thought to myself, not being able to get insurance wont stop me from getting a license. So I did 4 lessons and got the license, waited untill the endorsement was due to end and then applied for a full license. They then told me that I had an addtional 6 months to do because of the gap in having a valid license.... I was ready to kill someone.

Anyway, called an insurance company one day to try and get insurance on a 1.6 passat with the endorsement finished and full license and I was quoted €12,500. I called Hibernian who told me that they would not insure me until 10 years after the endorsement had ended.... Thats just making up their own rules in my book so I refuse to have anything to do with them and if anyone ever asks my opinion of them, i make it clear to avoid at all costs. Others quoted around 4.5K. Axa was the only one who really listened and gave me a half decent quote of €2,600 for the first year and then €1,800 for the second year. This year they wanted €1,620 even though I have my second years no cliams, full license and no penalty points so I got the same policy off Allianz for €1,202. I asked Axa why my premium was so high. They told me that my 1.6 Renault Laguna is a high performance vehicle to which I couldnt help but laugh down the phone at them. I then explained that I was having difficulty understanding how my car is a high performance vehicle so the guy started looking through the specs and said well, em, lets see, it has a 16 valve engine. I said you'd be doing well to get a car these days that doesnt have a 16 valve engine.

OP, how long have you spent off the road since you were convicted of drink driving? Was it a ban or an endorsement that put you off the road? Worst case scenario, as far as im aware, if you call a bunch of insurance companies and they all refuse to quote, the first company you called has to quote you. This is what I was told but I cant see how it would work because you could call each of them and say that they were the first but they do say the insurance companies share information.

edit: Just remembered that you have quotes posted on this thread. You will need to declare the ban/endorsement for a period after it ends. Some insurance companys ask if youve had anything in the last 3 years and some if youve had anything in the last 5. Id be suprised you are getting so many quotes if you are telling them everything and you do need to tell them everything because if you dont and you have an accident, your insurance cert/agreement will be about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
( i need to have a quote for the judge when i apply for the liecence back )
What do mean by this? Do you have to make an application to the courts to get your licence back after your ban has finished?

i got three years off the road but can appeal it after serving two years . my solicitor told me i need to have a written quote and also do a alcohol awareness course (which i have done ) before the judge will entertain my appeal

Ahh right, I had an endorsement for 3 years and did the full 3 years off the road, + 1 before I got it stamped on for it to start, + the six months when I didnt have a licence and a bit more before it was old enough for the insurance companies to start talking sense. Kinda wished afterwards that I had appealed it esp considering it was a genuine mistake that I was 3 days out of insurance and you'll never know if you dont try so you might as well give it a go.
