Working with animals to stop drinking

    Hello everyone.

I am a very heavy drinker and I really want to stop. I believe (after much consideration) that the only thing that is making me so miserable is that i HATE my job. It's a desk job, 9-5, where you can't say anything unless you back it up in writing.

    I want to change this.

I want to work with animals. Without being a vet, or a vet nurse, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Go to your local ISPCA office and talk to them, maybe try for some weekend voluntary work.

Congratulations on deciding to take control of things :)

There are privately run animal shelters in various parts of the country such as PAWS (www.paws.ie) or Kildare Animal Foundation (www.animalfoundation.ie). It'd be worth finding out if there's something like these near you. I'm sure that such places would be very grateful for any help although I'm not sure that they'd be able to pay you. Maybe you could try it in your spare time - even that might help you to make a decision about what to do next.

Would you consider trying out AA? - it'd give you the support that you will need to make the changes in your life that you're considering and would also help you to understand the patterns and causes of your drinking. I know a couple of people who have battled heavy drinking and have transformed their lives with the help of others who have been through the same or worse. It would also give you the opportunity to help others in the future.
