    Hello

Would anyone know how safe this cycle could be at 8am Mon-Fri? I'm thinking if I drove this route it would take ages with traffic (or would it?) In any case I'd like to have the option.
I used to cycle from Crumlin to Drumcondra. Just wondering how cycle friendly this route would be in comparison with city cycling.

I saw on wikipedia that's there is no cycle lanes on the N82 and prob none on N81 too?

Would anyone do this route or part of this route?

Moving to this area next week from down the country and wondering where the best place to find a place to live would be.

any advice would be much appreciated please :)

If I'm understanding your areas right, I'd have no problem heading from Tallaght to the Naas road via the Outer Ring Road. Then it's just a short hop up the Naas road to Rathcoole. The only *possibly* dodgy bits that I can think of would be around Citywest. Keeping a good head on your shoulders at those junctions and giving way and being assertive in the right place should mean no problems.

Should be handy enough, I used to do the same route except towards Rathcoole in the mornings and this was back when the road from Tallaght to Rathcoole via Saggart was just a country lane.
Where in Tallaght are you coming from ? If you were coming via the bypass I'd take a right turn down towards Fettercairn. You have a number of options, you can take the first left and go towards Citywest on the outskirts of Rossfield but I wouldn't go that way. You could go straight towards Fettercairn and when there you have two options, straight on at the new road towards the N7 and you can head into Rathcoole from there, or turn towards Brookfield and head towards Saggart via City West and into Rathcoole from there, the road is not bad at all, just the dodgy natives :D

The other option if straight up the N81 past Jobstown and into Saggart from there but that route wouldn't be ideal with regards the road and traffic, especially when you get to the right turn off the N81 towards Saggart.

Thanks so much irishmotorist and Jip for those prompt replies.

I'm thinking I may well have more space on the the N7 but not sure about that route with all the fumes and citywest people turning left.

Not sure Jip where I'll be coming from as yet. )I'm looking on daft at the moment.)
I'm thinking somewhere in Tallaght (near the luas and or nightlink) would be the good option to find a place as I'd have the dublin bus and luas as well as being not so far so as to cycle or drive to work.

From the map, it looks like getting on Fortunestown Way and then Fortunestown Lane would seem like the best option as it should have less cars. Can you cycle in both directions on this route?

any further advice would be appreciated. thanks again

eh, us tallaght men are alright

yeah, pretty much the route jip explains, tell me exactly where you`ll be leaving from in Tallaght and ill give you the best routage, no need to go to the Naas road anyway, so dont even think about that

thanks chrisbonnie. Not sure where I'll be setting off from yet. Just thinking of getting a place in Tallaght. I think where ever I'll head off from I'll take the fortunetown lane/way route.
Just wondering if I can cycle in both directions hassle free that way.

ah yeah, no bother at all, all the roads are fairly new, so they`re plenty wide and decent surfaces

once you`re not too far down in tallaght, as in balrothery, or firhouse area, you`d get to rathcoole in 20 minutes easy, and that wouldnt be breaking a sweat

IMO, people turning left is valid enough, but very possible to overcome. Also IMO, fumes are nothing to consider - especially on a nice windswept road like that. I'd imagine one would get more fumes just sitting at home watching the telly. Stats from my indepth analysis on that one to follow :pac:

Regards wondering how the roads are on Fortunestown Way, it's a normal road dividing an estate, the Cheeverstown Road has been completely relaid now so has a cycle lane both directions the full length, I can't say it won't be full of glass though, and you can turn left up Brookfield Road and onto Fortunestown Lane from there.

And yip Chris, us Tallaght lads are great :p

i'd suggest this route (which is pretty much what the others suggested as well).

    http://www.mapmyride.com/route/ie/baile%20baod%e1in/982125690867045415

the stretches between km 4 and 5 and km 6 and 7 can be a bit tight at times but i assume you are going towards rathcoole in the mornings so your lane should be fine as the majority of traffic comes inbound.

don't even bother taking the N81 up to saggart. the road is narrow for cars as it is and you'll cause huge traffic jams as cars cannot pass you for most it. plus visibility there is bad there so it's quite dangerous with the darkness that we'll have at 8am shortly.
