I've just come back from a spin and noticed that the chain is rubbing off the inside of the chainstay... this wasnt happening before the spin and i can't see what's causing it. Any idea why this is or how i might rectify it?? also i've noticed that my steerer tub seemed to sieze in the headtube after a particularly wet day out. is this just due to the headset being dirty and not having enough grease or might there be some other reason?? one last thing, this may be me just being crazy but my freewheel seems to click quite loudly, i'm comparing it to the freewheel on my ss now, so i'm not sure if that's a good comparison. anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you all

Almost definitely the bearings need to be cleaned and greased or replaced.

Some are louder than others and most will get louder over time. Lightly greasing it will dampen down the noise.

you can see where it rubs just above the derailleur hanger.
there is also some rubbing visible on the chain but i couldn't get a picture of that.

thanks for the other advice, will get onto it

That's the inside of the chainstay, right? Because it looks like the image has been flipped.

    Anyway, two options:

Firstly, you could have a really tight frame clearance and the last time you put on the wheel you tightened the QR more than usual, enough to push the chainstay towards the chain.

Secondly, you could have a bent derailleur hanger (although they usually get bent inwards and not outwards) which is causing the chain to be pulled towards the chainstay. Tightening the higher limit screw might sort it, but if the hanger is badly out of line, it could be better to get a new one.

Pic confused me too. It looked like a derailer on the left hand side.
Can you show pic of freewheel/freehub as I suspect the setup you have is not compatable with frame. The imprint on the inside of the derailer hanger looks like that from a lock washer so it may also have been asembled incorrectly and may be responsible for excessive noise in freewheel/hub. May also be incompatable casette.

The lock ring on the freewheel might have come loose or the hub might have broken.

i had thought the only issue with compatibility would be width, the piece the chain is rubbing against does appear to stick out more than i would have thought.

OK 10 speed cassette on freehub.
If it was OK earlier the only thing I can think of is wheel bearing failure or freehub body bolt has worked loose. Is there any noticeable lateral movement of the cassette apart from rotating it.
Do you have another 10 speed wheel that you could put on to narrow down the possibilities.

no lateral movement at all and unfortunately only the one 10spd wheel so i have no other point of reference. everything looks nice and tight as far as i can tell and it was tightened to the correct torque less than 200km ago so i can't imagine it's worked its self loose
