    Hi there,
Am travelling to Bombay in Feb 2010 for 5/6 wks (with an option to stay longer) and am hoping to do some volunteering while there - however all of the organisations I've been in touch with so far are really expensive ..... just wondered if anyone out there has been to India and worked with possibly a grass-roots organisation that they could recommend or have any suggestions for my trip. * I do not mind making a donation but in the current climate €2000+ is far too much (thats what I've been quoted with many orgs so far!) Am willing to travel outside of Bombay if necessary.

Any advice would be much appreciated,
    Noeleen

Well I was in Kolkata and worked with Sealdadh School and Mother Teresa's Sisters of Charity and none ever asked for a penny from anyone. Also in many of the hostels there were signs up looking for people to work in railway schools and the like.
One thing I noticed is that if you are willing to work for free, you could be doing the really dirty work - cleaning wounds covered in flies and stuff (I did that back in the day). If you want to pay a few grand you'll be singing nursery rhymes.
Of course there are exceptions, and Mother T's place will have you doing all sorts of work.
For India if you want to work for free for a grassroots organisation it's best to just get there and look. None of the places I came across in Kolkata use the internet or would have any interest spending some of their time on it, they just take whoever shows up.
