Skype set-up

    Hi all,

Long time reader, 1st time poster, I have the following question:

Having moved to a new place, I decided to go the midband + skype route instead of a landline (way cheaper, but most importantly easier to get installed as they was no existing line). I have subscribed to O2 and all is well.

The only thing is, I don't always turn on my laptop when I come home in the evenings, so I end up being not reachable then, and won't find out if I have messages on the skype answer machine. So I was thinking of ways I could use skype without the laptop.

One solution I thought of would be to get a 3G router + a skype phone, but that would be quite expensive.

Another solution would be to move my mobile phone from Meteor to 3, as, as far as I understand, you can use some of their phones to skype in and out for free (i know it wouldn't be midband then, but still an option). The thing is, I quite like my free texts with meteor.

Maybe it would just be simpler to have the laptop always on?!

I was just wondering, would anyone have an opinion or other ideas?

I have vodafone midband and have never been able to get skype to work correctly. Something about the ping being to high. Techie stuff I know nothing about.

On the Skype enabled 3 phones you don't actually get free Skype In & Out - just free Skype to Skype, you would have to pay extra for Skype In & Out, though it is quite cheap, so you would need to check prices if you were going to switch to the 3 network just for Skype. The free Skype to Skype is only for billpay customers. If you are a prepay you have to top up by a certain amount per month (I think it's €10) for free Skype to Skype for that month. I don't know what the terms are regarding prepay & Skype In & Out as regards whether you still have to top up your phone once a month. So you may want to check all that out on the 3 site.

Also, you do get 333 free webtexts a month now with 3, & you can actually use them from your phone, & if you were going for a billpay plan you get texts included in your flexi units. As far as I know they have an offer that if you port over to them you get €100 credit (don't ask me what the small print is!) & they are offering extra texts now for new customers on certain plans.

I guess it depends how many people have it around where you live, as you are sharing the resources with them. I tested it in my flat before I took it and it works fine for me. Now I hope it will last, which is obviously not guaranteed!

Thanks Jeckle. I looked into this a while back and the only conclusion that I remember getting to, is that it wasn't at all easy to get the info. I will have another look on 3's website and here on boards.

In case any one is interested, what's written here seems to summarise the current status pretty well: you can't do SkypeIn on Three phones, except by a hack that requires to have a pc always on...
So it doesn't make much sense for me (granted, it would allow me to skype from anywhere, but it doesn't happen often that I want to skype away from my laptop)

I signed up with 3G network only yesterday because I disconnected my home phone with Talk Talk pig filth.. and was sick of topping up €20 every week with Vodafone it was working out waaaaaaaaaaaay to costly.

I got a Nokia E63. Skype does come free installed already on the phone. In fact I topped up on-line a few mins ago with €10, this will last ages and ages. As long as you make just one call within 180 days then your credit is safe.
I can log in on my mobile phone (if you log in on-line before hand, click on SKYPE TO GO logo, they will giv you a number you can call straight from your mobile phone, that solves the problem of having to have your lap top on just to make calls. I just called my brothers mobile in Holland and my sisters landline too all from my mobile!
You can text too with SKYPE to international numbers because. Problem with 3G bill pay is that on a package, we'll say BOB (best of both) you are unable to text internationally, you have to top up separately with 3G credit.
I dont know about voice mails yet, but I am gonna check this later. I hope this explains things. I was waaaaaaaaaaaay confused about the whole thing. But go to the SKYPE website if you've any Q's .

    :D
