    Hey,

I've been thinking about buying a Dell studio 15
Just wondering if now is a good time to buy or should I wait a while.
Judging by the delll site, Their current offers seem to be expiring on November 4th.

Is it a fairly reliable laptop ?

Also, how much is the Intel Dual core Better than the Core2 Duo ?

    Thanks

It's a Dell. It'll be reasonable. Not the best, but not the worst.

I don't know what you mean? A Core2Duo is a particular range of Intel's dual core offerings. Others are the Pentium Dual Core (weaker) and the Celeron Dual Core (weaker) and the Athlon X2 (weaker).

Technically an Intel Dual Core is not better than a Core 2 Duo. It's the other way round. The Core 2 Duo's are a faster series of Intel's Dual Core processors.

So there wouldnt be a massive difference between a 2.1 Ghz Dual Core T4300 and 2.2 Ghz Core2 Duo T6600 ?

I would say not a huge difference but bear in mind the T6600 has 2mb Cache so thats twice of what the T4300 has.

There would be a wee bit of a difference all right. the T6600 should feel more responsive due to the larger cache.

I was also looking at this laptop
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Aspire-Notebook-Windows-Premium/dp/B002SG7K8E/ref=pd_ts_ce_11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

Anyone know if its any good for the price?

Acer have quite a good reputation for being great value and reliable. Equal to dell in reliablility, alot better value. There customer service for warranty repairs etc is also good but its not as easy as dell in my opinion.

I have been looking at the Acer5738G as well. Specs on that one are confusing though. According to Acer site it has no web cam and only 3gig of RAM. Maybe its an altered spec but since there is no option for asking a question on the amazon site I dont know how to check.

I'd believe Acer over Amazon. I've been looking at laptops on Amazon recently, and sometimes they don't even bother listing the full specifications of a model, or they'll list conflicting information or, as in this case, they'll just be plain wrong. Whoever is responsible for the content of that section really doesn't give a sh*t about their job.

LaptopsDirect are listing the 5738G with the same spec
According to them its due in november

Comet seem to be doing the same spec too
    Win7, Core2Duo T6600, Radeon 4570, Webcam ect

    http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/600024/ACER-AS5738G

It seems that the windows 7 version of the 5738G is a new config of this model

That Acer seems to be the 5738G -64G32MN model. Saw it on the acer site but not anywhere else until now. Doesn't look too bad for the price.

    Finally got the 5738g

The specs are the ones on the amazon site...
Loving it so far..I underestimated the ATI 4570HD :pac:
Handles Bioshock and COD4 pretty well on max settings :)

Wow, I have that graphics card albeit in a Dell Studio 15. Must give some games like those a go, didn't know it could handle games like that.

Well i only played the demos from steam for like 2 minutes each..Didnt really get into many big firefights yet so it may yet lag..

According to systems requirements lab, It can max Crysis and MW2...I'm a tad bit sceptical though ;)

I'm not sure it can run Crysis on max settings, maybe medium but I've never tried it.

4570 is a decent low/mid-range laptop card. Notebookcheck have it getting around 4000 3DMark06 with a decent dual core.

With that kind of card you could probably just about get playable framerates on Cod4 with max settings (no AA) but realistically you'd be advised to turn a few options off (shadows, spec map etc) to ensure properly fliud framerates.

Not a chance it can max Crysis though. LOL. Mixture of low/medium settings tbh.

I know this has been mentioned already, but would there be a huge difference between the Pentium Dual Core T4300 and Core 2 Duo T6600 for gaming? I don't plan on playing anything really heavy, maybe just the odd game of Counter-Strike or Left 4 Dead.

Also, dabs.ie have the 5738G in stock, but as far as I can tell, they don't say anything about the graphics card  Am I missing something?

I guess my question is: would I be better off going for the Studio 15 or the 5738G for what I plan on doing with it (taking notes, watching movies, listening to music and the occasional game)?

As far as I know, some of the 5738s come with the same graphics card as the studio...
