My cousin is almost sure she is going to lose her job in the next week or so through redundancies in her job. She has only just also found out she is pregnant, too early to tell her job anyway. if she was to stay in her job, she would have been entitled to the state maternity benefit. If she loses her job and has to claim the dole, will she be entitled to this anyway based on the prsi paid in the previous year or whatever way it works?

Tell her employer asap. If only making some people redundant they would be scared to sack a pregnant woman

yeah i know thats an idea, but she is very early pregnant she doesnt really want to have to tell them. i was thinking she would get the benefit anyway cause its based on prsi paid last year??

Purely from a health and safely perspective she should tell her employer as soon as possible about the pregnancy, not to mention the fact that she may well suffer from severe morning sickness and need to take bit of time off to cope with it.

    Rules

Maternity Benefit is paid by the Department of Social and Family Affairs to women who have a certain number of paid PRSI contributions on their social insurance record and who are in insurable employment up to the first day of their maternity leave. The last day of work can be within 16 weeks of the end of the week your baby is due

The PRSI contributions can be from employment or self-employment - PRSI classes that count for Maternity Benefit are A, E, H and S (self-employed).

If you are employed you must have:

    * At least 39 weeks PRSI paid in the 12-month period before the first day of your maternity leave

    Or

    * At least 39 weeks PRSI paid since first starting work and at least 39 weeks PRSI paid or credited in the relevant tax year or in the tax year immediately following the relevant tax year. For example, if you are going on maternity leave in 2009, the relevant tax year is 2007 and the year following that is 2008.

    Or

    * At least 26 weeks PRSI paid in the relevant tax year and at least 26 weeks PRSI paid in the tax year immediately before the relevant tax year. For example, if you are going on maternity leave in 2009, the relevant tax year is 2007 and the year before that is 2006.
