I've been looking for a copy of The Lion King for a while now. I haven't seen it in any shops though and its €49.99 from Play.com. How come its so expensive? Other Disney DVDs are only about €20 and some are buy one, get one free.

This has been asked several times here if you used the search function you would have found your answer, Anyway its OOP (Out of Print) it was only released for a short time period and nowerdays some websites have it at a high price because its OOP but on Ebay I have seen it go cheaper.

Don't know how reputable this site is, as I've never heard of them before!

    Region 1 Import (NTSC)

    Region 2 2-Disc Special Edition

    Just don't buy from DVDYes.co.uk!

EDIT: Appears MovieBytes aren't much better!

I'm one of the lucky few that has it, and yes I did pre-order it to get my free Simba plush at the time :D Go on, you can all touch me, one at a time though!

How come its been out of print? I know that may be a silly question but it seems stupid that one of their most popular films isn't available.

    Google 'Disney Moratorium'

    Lots of good info here...

ALL Disney DVD's have a premium on them, regardless of how old they are. Ridicolous but if you look up most of their films on DVD online they will be very expensive indeed.

They release a classic movie every year for a limited run, Lion King was released in 2003.

I got it on ebay for €17 about 2 years ago.

It is scheduled to be coming out on Blu ray in the autumn of 2010 according to some film mags.

Its a pretty cynical business ploy by Disney. They release their films 'for a limited time only' to keep the price nice and high. Fans rush out to snap them up quickly before they completely sell out.

They're pulling a new stunt with the Snow White release, releasing a Blu Ray/DVD combination a week before the regular DVD.

I like that idea though, gives you both formats, Disney movies are an investment these days its worth buying a regular copy and if they do some special box set get that too and flog it on ebay in a few years, I'll be getting the limited Snow White box:

In some smaller stores you can still get some of the Disney movies in 'the vault'. Peter Pan is still widely available in HMV and Easons stores in Limerick even though it's been OOP since February of this year.

Yep - hopefully BluRay means that Disney will re-release most of their movies in the new format. I am really looking forward to Fantasia on Blur Ray - haven't seen that movie since I was knee-high to a donkey.

It's the Pixar blurays I'm getting impatient on. On R2 the only ones available are Wall-e, Ratatouille, Cars and Monsters Inc. On R1 you can get A Bug's Life, which is region-free thankfully.

So of the back catalogue that leaves Toy Story 1 & 2 (probably gonna be released to tie in with Toy Story 3 next summer), Finding Nemo and The Incredibles.
