Volunteering seems to be expensive? Thoughts please?

Contemplating doing some volunteering in South Africa but it seems very expensive. 2,000 Euro for the 12 weeks, flight will cost about a grand and i'd say another 500 for food and the likes. That is 3,500 Euro - seems to be bloody expensive but this seems to be the going rate for most volunteer packages so to speak. Anyone…
