    There should be no problems with that, a friend of my father's who had a capri out back for a few
    years and registered it when it became vintage.

    It will most likely go to the month it was registered however, so if the car was originally registered
    in October, you'd have to wait till October 2010 or later to bring it in without paying the VRT.

    As long as the government decide to leave the vintage system as is that is, they changed in the UK a while
    back and now it's only cars before 1972 that can have vintage status over there.

    You should have no trouble, folk do it all the time.Just ensure you get the FULL V5 from the UK owner, and bear in mind that strictly speaking an Irish resident cannot drive a foreign registered car.......EVER ! ( few exceptions - hire car, company car etc..)

    So you are therefore supposed to bring the foreign car to the VRT office within 24 hours to re-register it.

    Thats the law but you wont get stopped if you arent driving it.

    Change the oil at least once a year, and start and drive it 2 weekly (even up and down the driveway).

    You can always just write to DVLA Swansea for a certificate of permanent export which works just as well.

    or weven just take in whatever youve got when re-registering it.....I re-reg'd my taunus using a photocopy of the papers from France used by the UK authorities to register it there....it had the date of first reg on it and the chassis number and they dont need a lot else...

    You cant register it on ZV Plates, they'll give you a 81 D 1234 reg, those lucky cars goin around wit zv plates are the true irish classics, you can spot imports cuz they have modern-style plates, govt changed to new system round 87 as i recall. My dad has a 75 merc 220d with the reg " 75 KE " not zv.

    Was wondering though, if you register a classic car, can you chose the reg for free?? eg: 1982 bmw 316, can you ask em for 82 D 316 or will they just give you a random one? I know you can book new 2010 plates for next year by paying €1000, but do you still need to pay that if you wanna choose your reg on a classic?

    ZV plates are for imports lad.Any other Z or I plate apart from a ZZ is an original pre 1987 registration.

    No,you get the next in line.You just pay your VRT.

    to pick your plates is 1000 squid i just tried it on my golf..i just laughed and said i think i'll give it a miss

    Ah, seem to be corrected, my bad. Must ask the father next time why the fudge he chose a 75 reg instead of a zv. yeah, i dunno, was thinkin if you saved the money by only payin €50 on vrt, you could use the saved vrt money to splash out & book the 81 d 316. would look cooler than zv 12345. What do ye think?

    81D316 is long gone,registered about 22 years ago,it was on a Golf 1.5 that was last taxed in 1994.

    Incidentally 86C316 is on a BMW 316,it was parked in a back road down in macroom near a pub called MaryAnnes i think.The car is still taxed.Pretty cool to get a reg like that on an import.:)

    Those nice numbers are called "Cherished" plates if I remember correctly.

    They can only be got on cars after 1992/1993 (not sure on the exact year),
    I remember trying to get one for my 1987 944, but the boy in Rosslare
    told me you can't go back that far unfortunately.

    And the 1000 is for all fancy numbers too, wanted one for my 1999 S8
    (was gonna get 99 G 58 - it's still available too dammit!)
    but it's hard to justify a quarter of the cars purchase price on a plate!

    Aww carchaeologist, that car is SWEET!!!!! I love 80s 6 series bmws. Would sell my girlfriend for one!! How do you reckon he got the csi 633 plate??? I didnt think you could get reg plates like that in Irl?

    Well,back in September 1982 someone was waiting in a Motor tax office somewhere in Dublin for that number to become availible,thats probably all it took.
    It was possible,pre 1987, to legally transfer old numbers onto new cars then too,providing the original car was scrapped. GTI 1 and GTI 2 are MK1 Golf GTIs,GTI 205 is a Peugout 205 GTI,these were originally mid 60s limerick county issues. Cant do it now though,well,not legally anyway.

    Dont think your GF would appriciate being traded for a 6 series...:)

    It was actually common practice in the very early eighties (mainly 80-81-82), for Dealerships rather than private individuals to claim certain numbers for their cars: the Mercedes guys, took hold of the numbers 500, 350 and 280 for example, Porsche had a few cars with 911 in the reg number, I myself owned a Saab 900 with "900 AZL" as the reg, and ofcourse the BMW's had 525, 635 and 633.

    I have to agree though with charcheologist: they don't come better than the "CSI 633" plate, but I do believe there was a "CSI 635" as well !!

    I actually used to be sent into the Reg Office in Dublin to wait for a certain number to come up. You just basically phoned every day 'till you knew it would be coming the next day and went in in person and asked to be informed when the number came up.

    Some of the dealers who did it all the time had it down to a fine art and had contacts and could do it over the phone, but if two people wanted the number the person who was at the desk got it !

    There were lots of cool numbers/sequences. If a specific number wasn't possible garages would try to get a cool reg. for a car if it was any way unique, reg's with triple digits for example, like 111 and the like.

    After the rules changed in '87 you could still do this with no extra charge. It was only with the VRT introduction that the cost was applied.

    That 944 reg is cool for only €315, was thinkin of importin a early 80s 924, then I could get 8x CE 924. I'd frikkin love that. Hard to justify the cost tho... will think about it
