I just got Steven Slate EX and "metal and more" and "essential pop/rock 3"
They have a deal on at the moment for $150
You get a massive sample library of AMAZING sounding drums.
For each drum you get close mic hard/medium/soft with 4 variations of each level so you can randomize AND a bit of room and all room to mix with the close mics.
There is also a midi drum program based on NI Kontakt.
The drum samples are unbelievably good.
I am using them for a mix today so I will post a few bars of live kit and sample replaced kit later (or tomorrow).

My pack is 14GB so you would need a fast internet connection.
Took me about 4 hours with NTL 20MB!

Here is a small section of live kit.
The first part is fully live.
The second part is time corrected using Logic's flex then kick, snare, toms mixed with Slate samples.
Makes a big difference especially in the context of a full mix.

Very interesting Michael - thanks for posting that. Also, it's great to have the samples of your live kit & then the mixed/sample replaced version. It's a great benchmark for somebody like me trying to get the best drum sound I can in a small home set up.

Actually, I think I'll post a sample of my own & would appreciate any feedback from other.

Dadumtish... I know you're looking to go the sample route, but I'm cligning on for dear life to use 100% live drums for now!

Here is a full metal mix from last weekend with slate drum samples.
Really helps cut the kicks and snare through a dense mix especially with quad tracked guitars.

There's a fair whallop off that kit alright - sounds great.

Your clips are starting to depress me... maybe I'll drop the drums & take up playing Stylophone instead...

He is also doing a new drum replacement plugin ala Drumagog which uses his samples. Good sounding drums BTW. Dont get depressed Yoda, everyone augments drum sounds these days to some extent.

Cheers Denis... yeah, I knew Michael had used the Slate sample in there too. I have my other Massey secret weapon - DTM, so I can use that to add samples too if needs be.

I'm not giving up - it's all about making lots of small improvments & A/Bing all the time!

sounds great even for crap music ;)

how do you do the cymbals ( they are real live ones you did yes? )

    very nice.

its far quicker and eaiser to create music with a drum program than
doing it with real drums. - ive learned this the hard way .:D

I will get the slate trigger when it is released.
I am using aptrigga which is cool.
The cymbals are A Custom projection crashes 17 and 18.
They just sound like that. Amazing cymbals for recording.
The overheads are usually hi passed at about 400. No other eq other than a small mid cut sometimes depending on how the snare sounds.
Then go through URS Channel Strip Pro's 1176 emu (FET 4).
4:1 medium/slow attack (40-70ms) and fast release (12-20ms) with very low threshold hitting about 4bd gain reduction. These settings will really enhance the decay portion of the cymbals and make them sound big rather than splashy.
I usually sidechain compress the overheads from the tom bus so the toms really punch.

I'm thinkin' of getting the EX pack with the 2 for 1 deal. I was going to buy Session 2 but Slate sounds much better I think. Plus they have a Green Day kit which will give me a good starting point for what I want. :)

Make sure you get pop/rock 3.
Snare 12a is worth the asking price on its own.

    Yeah, I'm gonna get 2 & 3.

im using toontracks the metal foundry on multiouts mixed with toontracks nashville, pop/rock & dfh

gently comp nashville, poprock and dfh, add some filtergain in the mid section, eq up the lows and highs around 8dB and slowly introduce it to the metal foundry's mix.

    sounds awesome
