I was watching The Sweeney yesterday and in one episode alone, without studying the background in scenes too hard, I saw the following:

    Cast of Characters:

    Jaguar XJ in red
    Rover P6
Granada in silver with vinyl roof
    Rolls Royce
Capri MKIII in black ( JPS colours?)
    Fiat 850 white
    Austin maxi
    Daf 33 yellow
    Bedford icecream van
    Allegro ( blue)
    Marina ( burgundy)
    Triumph 1300
    Sunbeam Alpine
    Cortina MKII grey
    Morris Oxford
    Spitfire MKIV blue hard top
    Capri MKIII yellow
    BMC 1100/1300
    Silver Granada no vinyl
MKI Transit - this was immaculate - like brand new.
    Escort MKII squad car
    Peugeot 504
Cortina MKIII white with natty red double go faster stripes
    Transit Black Mariah

Thats without teh credits, which has some interesting oldies in there too.

    ITV 4 I think.

If you have a sky box you can tune it in manually free, AFAIK.

    Or its on Freesat.

The Professionals (ITV4) is also good for car spotting

    They're the cast cars.

The real fun is spotting the background stuff.

The Alpine for instance was in car park where regan was arguing with a criminal. And the Spitfire was belonging to the duaghter of a famous villain.

    Class stuff.

Ah, The Sweeney, my all time favourite!

You'll be happy to see that the Consul GT has survived and is currently being restored by the current owner. A big job too...

    Major job.

Fair play. it IS an iconic car though.

Bodie's Capri went for 25k or some silly figure like that recently.

The Sweeney was on again last night but the missus insisted on turning over to Corrie halfway through.

It'll be repeated today I'm sure.

A red Fiat 850 turns up in several episodes. Must have been a very popular car in West London in the mid 70s...mmmm.

Watch more episodes and you may spot gear such as an Aston Martin DB6 Volante, Shelby Mustang, and a Ferrari 208/308 GT4 2+2.

Have fun spotting, you should be able to pick up the box set for about 48 sovs, and they'd nicely tidied up the film, with some good extras.

The red 850 was there agai last night. Obviously a crew car.

Its funny how Life On Mars is a pastiche of The Sweeney really. But I have noticed that The Sweeney's streets are constantly full of parked and moving cars, while LOM has very few really. Obviously they didn't want to hire dozens and dozens of classic cars for filming.

Even the London - Manchester thing wouldn't really account for it.

There's a burgundy MKIII 'Tina that turns up a few times in LOM, for instance, once being driven by villains into a football game and another time parked foreground at a seige situation.
