Laptop - Basic or higher spec

Seaching for a laptop at the moment and its like looking for a nice bit of hay in a haystack. Drifting from ahh sure a basic one will do, to I should get something decent so I wont be looking again in a years time. Lookin to spend about 500-700 or so. Will basically be a replacement for an existing desktop (kids can play away with it then).

Like most poeple I can use them but dont know much about them. The more I look the more I see, and the more confused I get i.e. find one and then find out there are 5 different models of it etc

    So:

    1. Dual core OK or should it be at least a core2duo processor

    2. more than 1 meg cache important or not?

    3. Intergrated graphics or dedicated (dont game but will be downloading films and watching them on it)

    4. 2gig RAM enough or at least 3 or 4?

    5. Hard disk size - not bothered, got a few externals

    6. Wireless - What exactly is N standard and do you need it?

    7. Optical drive type - Not bothered about B-ray or burning DVDs so this doesn't really matter

    8. Bluetooth - Handy to have it or not?

Sorry for the long post. Not sure it makes any sense. Sort of have a few in mind at the moment but that could change by tomorrow - Dell studio 15, Acer 5738 or Sony NW20

    Any comments/help would be appreciated

    2. God Yes
    3. Always a fan of Dedi
    4. 2gb has been runninng me good. and i game quite a bit. but if youre in the buildng phase, may as well go for 4. cant hurt.
    5. passports ftw
    6. N should stand for New Hotness. Its faster than B or G by a significaant amount. google wireless N and read the wiki page for more info.
    7. can always get a usb drive later
    8. gimmick tbh. usb bluetooth controls are easy to get. unless you already have several devices for its use, dont bother.
    9. oh wait there is no 9.

acer iirc has the highest customer satisfaction rate at the moment.

Studio15's dont look as good value as they were on the dell site and I'm only tempted by the sony for its looks, so after a good bit of looking around I'm leaning towards the Acer5738 or 5738G.

Best price I can find (if I exclude laptopsdirect and its variants) is 520 on Amazon for the 5738 and 595 on Dabs for the 5738G. Only real difference seems to be the graphics card and less RAM with the G model.

    Are these good value?
