    - Rang them
    - Asked my question
    - Put on hold
    - The line went dead (assuming they hung up...)

    Go to the 02 website
    Select Services
    Select Broadband
    Select setting up your modem

You will see the 3 types of modem them have.

Under each you can select to download the updated software.

This will work fine with windows 7 :D

    Which modem you using?

I have an E220 and the Sierra Wireless Compass 888.

I managed to get both of them working.

The Sierra Wireless is already compatible to work with Win 7 you might just need to perform the update, which is easy enough through the 3G watcher software.

For the E220, it's not officially compatible to work with Win7 yet. O2 are awaiting official drivers from Huawei - however the latest O2 Approved Firmware and dashboard update for the E220 available at www.o2.ie/firmware did the job for me.

I presume the same would work for the E270.

Not sure about the E170 or the E1752 though.

    Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the help all! Got it going with the info ^ :)

Total disaster that they havent provided offical drivers yet... Bit lackluster isnt it!

Now, back to enjoying Windows 7 :D

Got my new laptop today which came with windows 7. pluged in my o2 modem E220, it loaded the software but could not find device. I sent a message to o2 from the o2 wesite, got reply they would contact me within the next three days. I went to o2 shop in Dublin, the guy there told me I need the newer model modem , mine is the older one. he told me I am not due an upgrade untill march next year and if i wanted the newer modem I would have to pay just over 200 euro. He advised me to just load xp. downloaded the firmware but no luck.

Lies and nonsense. The E220 will work fine on Windows 7, it just needs the right driver. I used the driver from my E169 on my sister's laptop, which is Windows 7 x64, and her E220 works fine now. The driver on the E220 modem just wouldn't work.

This is Huawei's list of firmware updates, which installs on to a modem, so I don't think this will help too much, but you could dig around, or see if any of them work at all.

Glad I found this post this morning, suggested to a guy at work that he buy a windows 7 laptop and the only broadband he can get it with a 02 dongle.
he brought it in this morning and of course it would not work.
after following this post i update the firmware using my work xp machine.
it went fine but when I ran the second firmware update file it crashed the xp machine and then it restarted.
got a bit of a fright as i was afraid that I had ruined his dongle.
Not sure if this supposed to happen but in any case, we stuck the dongle into the new windows 7 laptop and it is working a treat.
Really annoying to hear a 02 employee trying to persuade someone to spend another 200 euro on a new dongle when it is this easy.

Great to hear that some people have got the o2 E220 modem working. Please can you tell me how you did this. do i download from o2 the latest software for the E220 there are two listed. one for the E270 the other one is for my modem the E220. Do i just load it on to usb key then load and run it on windows 7. they are rar files. this is the only way i can think of doing it as i have no internet on windows 7. No way am i paying o2 the 200 they are looking for I will just cancel Direct debit from bank and go with vodafone.
    Regards dave

Folks, thanks for the info. Worked perfect. Just downloaded the firmware upgrade from o2, via the XP machine, then applied the two upgrades. I did un-install the previous version of the O2 Broadband client though, and re-installed the new one.

Went in to the o2 shop in Dundrum shopping center. The guy there was great told me the guy who told me i would have to pay for new modem in rathmines was off his head. He gave me support phone number. I rang them soon as I got home the girl in support told me she was forwarding me the procedure for downloading and installing the new software she explained I would have to download the two filed firmware from the o2 website then load it on to the software on the modem via the xp machine. I did this and it worked fine. Did not have to load the second file it worked after loading the first one , maybe number one file in loading brings in number two. anyway all is well with windows 7 and e220 modem. Now I cant get my lexmark 75 printer to work went to lexmark downloaded driver but no luck. but thats another days work. Thanks for the advice. :D

The firmware update will only run on a computer that the modem actually already works on and this correctly sees the modem.
So if you're trying to run this on the PC that's causing the problems it ain't going to happen i'm afraid.

    or

If you are already running this on a machine that the modem works on -
Make sure you have the O2 Broadband SW completly closed as otherwise it will not run.

If you think it's closed open it and close it again ,making sure it gives you the message "are you sure you want to terminate......."

Then try and run the update again.

Well aren't you great! You clearly had the newer v of firmware on your modem when you purchase it.... Lucky you!!!!

Run this patch every time you boot in win7 or vista.
This will allow windows to detect the modem not only the flash disk.

I have to do this every time i reboot win7.

As soon as you run the patch win7/vista will detect the modem and install the drivers.

This way you can update the modem firmware in win7/vista (no need for XP) after you run the patch.

The patch is not permanent, it will disappear at the next reboot.

    Regards,

    Mendo

Just to add, anti-virus software can prevent proper installation of the O2 modem on Windows 7 as well. I recently saw where pre-installed "BullGuard" anti-virus prevented it from working on a brand new laptop (with no on-screen notification). Uninstalled O2 software, uninstalled BullGuard, then installed O2 - got it working OK. Finally put on AVG anti-virus (free edition) and all working well again.
