Tee height with driver

It used to be said (back in the small headed persimmon wood days) that the ball height on the tee should be generally half above the clubhead at address. Do you think this should still be the rule with todays drivers ie; big high faced 460cc heads etc. The reason I ask this is because today I teed the ball a little lower with my driver (which is a fairly big mean machine) and the results were phenomenal! even though mentally at address it was a bit daunting, because i felt how can I hit the ball on the upswing when it looks so low? but it works, well at least, at the last few holes when I was well warmed up. So what is your general rule of thumb for modern driver tee height?

As I address the ball with a very steep angle I have to tee it higher and further up in my stance.

So I suppose different strokes for different folks.

    Its trial and error really.
No 2 drivers will be the same as the height of the sweet spot varies from club to club.

golf instructor said the ball should be just above the head of the driver on a large tee

Ya, my golf instructor basically said higher the better. i.e. if you can hit the sweet spot, the the higher the ball is at impact the better.

I used to have it very high but have recently brought it back down to half the ball over the clubface. Working well at the moment.

It's all going to depend on your build and more importantly, your swing.

I've started playing off these tees, they give a consistent height to aim at as you can only plant them so far.

Most pros seem to tee the ball fairly low with the ball showing about 1/2 to 1/3 over driver face. But they are not mortals and probably should not be used as a reference point. For us hackers the basics apply ... do what feels/looks right and works. Remember that teeing high promotes a draw (the high ball makes it easier to come from inside and up at the ball) ... while teeing low promotes a fade (difficult to come on the inside at the ball here with a driver, easier to cut across the ball slightly).

Recent article on Golf Digest (or some such mag) did show stats that demonstrated a definite increase in distance for teeing high (probably because it does promote a draw).

Experiment with both and see the results.

The height of the ball doesn't really matter as long as you hit it consistantly in the middle of the face of the driver.

Some pros like to tee it quite low.
