Hey, was using my laptop there and it just turned off, on turning it on it went into 'auto recovery' mode and after a while it said that windows can not be repaired automatically. I tried to system restore but lo and behold, apparantly it can't do that either, hurray!

So how can I get this data off best, get some external enclosure? I assume I can't install an OS somehow and keep my data?
Only really want my pictures of it..

Grab a bootable linux (live)(I'd personally recomend hirens boot cd) CD boot into it and transfer your pics across with a usb key or an external hard drive. Or you can remove yoru hdd, put it in an external enclosure and try to access it from another pc. You might be flat out of luck though, the hdd could be screwed.

something similar happened to me a while back, OS corrupted, installed a second copy of the OS onto another partition and copied all my files onto an external HD

Just use Ubuntu, it'll detect all devices and give a fully useable laptop, although a little slower as it'll be booting from cd.

Click the install icon on the desktop once You've rescued the stuff ;)

Ububntu will probably work, altough sometimes it doesnt mount the drive easily. I use hiren - mini xp which is really handy
