Hmmm dunno about this one. If it works it could be a great time saver. My gut says you will end up spending more time fixing the vocal rides the plugin makes than it would take to do the rides manually.

    Any thoughts?

Phuck me ........ I was only thinking about how it would be cool if there was such a thing in the last few weeks ....

Remember what Rupert was saying ' a day a vocal' ...

I think I will definitely check a demo of it out. As I say it could be a great time saver. $400 native - wonder will it be included in any of the exisiting bundles.

Wow! Where did all these things come from

From initial reading waves vocal rider differs in one crucial way - it allows you to side chain a mix to the plug so the rides are relative to the mix. Waverider seems to just create rides to achieve a constant level - that is not to say that that is not useful. But there is differences between the plugs

Yes , and 'slide it back 40ms for optimum results' ....

    Worth a spin though ..

One of the things Peter and I were talking about to experiment with was setting a Vocal against White or Pink Noise at a level that was 'matched' ie at the 'same' level - then we were going to try to work on the volume automation to boost the quiet bits to 'matched' and reduce the loud bits to 'matched' ......
Then drop that track back into a mix and see how it sat ...

Then I said to Peter, "For phucx sake get a life will ya ? Ya need to get out more ...."

a bit expensive for a volume controller, though I like the idea.
I guess it will do the trick, since it's not such a complex thing - I can do it!
shame that the non-waves one is for PT only :(
levelator looks interesting though! (linked from the SOS article)

wow.... i'm gonna give that a go. If it works as good as one would hope, this could save a lot of time! (however, i am a little sceptical, i don't know if vocal rides are as simple as that. It could work for some things though)

They'll probably have Pro Tools Automatic or something soon, it does your mixes for you. :D

    Lazy c*nts:p
I would have no interest in this at all.
I manually ride the fader not just for level but for effect.
Some lyrics need to be emphasized or the first line after a loud guitar lead needs to start loud and fade to where it was or vocal may need to be louder in a chorus due to an extra rhythm guitar etc etc.
Anyway I love the sound of compression when used properly.

I don't see why you would want the vocal at the same level relative to the rest of the track in the first place. Bringing the vocal back into the mix in certain parts and up in others creates a sense of dynamic anyway. Same as changing reverb settings for verses and choruses etc.

It might be useful for voice over work though.

Yes, you never need it to be the "same" level throughout. There's a musical dynamic. If the plugin is only looking at the vocal level, it has no chance to take the whole arrangement into account. That is a job best done by a human, for now!

Just tried Levelator, it's like a very sweet compressor. Looses a bit of top end, more than most compressors. Solved with a hi shelving boost. I still had to do rides, but not as many as I anticipated- this vocal was comped from about 20 takes in Pro Tools by a musician client. Levelator definitely made the job far easier.

I might try wave rider on the same vocal later.

Lazy is all you guys with your DAWs. Real men use a cutting lathe and one German mic to do the mix!!!
