Is there a bus you can take from Blackrock going to Dundrum Town Centre? Dublinbus.ie website is currently down, so I can't check it there. I am from Sandymount, so if travelling by bus, I take 2 rides. 1 - Bus 7/4/4A/45 from Merrion Road. Then drop off to the bus station quite near to Grafton St. Walk from there till reaching the Luas station in front of Stephen's Green Shopping Center. 2 - Take the Luas and drop off to Dundrum or Balally. Then walk from there to Dundrum Town Centre.

Is there any other bus number that I can ride to from Blackrock going straight to Dundrum?

Get the 17 bus from Blackrock DART station to Dundrum. 5 min walk up to Dundrum Town Centre.

If you are taking the 4/4a/7/7a/8 or 45 to Merrion Square, the 44 and 48a will take you from there (opposite the National Gallery) directly to Dundrum.

Check the times first though as they are every 40 minutes or so.

Also remember that a Travel 90 10 Journey smartcard (costs EUR 18) would keep the cost down to EUR 1.80 per single trip - cheaper than the bus/luas option.

Er, as Micilin kindly suggested, there is a direct 15 minute bus trip on the number 17. It's not overly frequent, but the times are surely on the bus stop.

I can't believe someone would actually come on here and recommend you get two buses, a bus all the way into town, and up to a 40 minute wait for another bus all the way back out again, Jesus that'll take an hour or more!

Do you have any bus from Sandymount to Stillorgan? You can take 75 from Stillorgan to Dundrum.

The OP said they were starting in Sandymount - that's a long way from Blackrock DART Station.

I was only trying to help - don't shoot the messenger.

The perils of a badly worded request. OP distinctly asked for a bus from Blackrock to Dundrum. If he wants a bus from Sandymount to Dundrum, then that is the question he should have asked. It's in the thread title, too... :)

Indeed. And I was not suggesting a 40 minute wait either - I distinctly said check the timetable first!!!

Either way OP, if you are going from Blackrock the 17 is the best bet - it starts from the DART station and also outside the Frascati Centre. Journey time would be in the region of 20 minutes - and you'll have a 10 minute walk to the Dundrum Centre from the bus stop. Check times first as there can be long gaps.

If you are going from Sandymount then either option may suit you.

I used to get the 17 quite frequently. It's great when it's on-time and there's little traffic, as it's the only route serving that orbital corridor. However, it is frequently late (can't say about getting it from the terminus though), seems to have a mind of its own as to whether it will go through UCD or not, and gets stuck in the horrible bottleneck of the Dundrum Road near Windy Arbour.

EDIT: Also, the 17 leaves you quite a distance from Dundrum SC - not a pleasant walk in the winter rain, believe me!
    /EDIT

If it's the case that you're travelling from Sandymount, I'd highly advise the bus into town then Luas out combo.

Perhaps people want to offer solutions to the OP that he may not have thought of.....18 bus from Sandymount to Ranelagh, Luas to Dundrum.

I think that one point remains though, the journey can be done cheaper by bus using the Travel 90 Smartcard rather than the bus/luas combo.

The traffic problems that you mention on the 17 in the Dundrum area are really only between 4pm and 7pm. The service itself is fairly reliable - it does generally leave the terminus on time. It needs to be remembered that the intermediate times are guide times and are not cast in stone. The only official times are the departure times from either terminus.

As far as UCD is concerned the situation is actually very clear. Heading west, the routing is:

    Monday-Friday:
Operates in via Main Gate and out via Owenstown Park gate onto Foster Avenue. The exception is during the morning and evening peaks (7.00a.m.to 10.30a.m. and from 4.00p.m. to 7.30.p.m.) when it operates in and out via the Main Gate, due to a barrier being closed preventing access to the Owenstown Park gate.

    Saturdays:
Operates in via Main Gate and out via Owenstown Park gate onto Foster Avenue until the 1745 bus. Does not serve UCD after this, operating direct to/from Blackrock via Foster Avenue.

    Sundays:
Does not serve UCD, operating direct to/from Blackrock via Foster Avenue.

    Eastbound the routing is reversed.

I never realised there was such rhyme and reason to it! When I was in school, I used to infrequently get it to the Radisson - when we reached the junction there with Foster Avenue, I'd always ask the driver if the bus was turning right or left! :o

And yes, the bottleneck is only at rush-hour. Off-peak and it's a breeze.

Of course there is one unpredictable element in all this, which is that from time to time the barrier in UCD may be opened during the peak times (seen it when the UCD jeeps are escorting Ambulances around) in which case the 17 will always take an available short cut, and anyone waiting at the montrose or on the first few Foster's Ave stops will miss out!

Is this use of a "short cut" mentioned in the timetable?

Not as far as I know.
