so my laptop speakers arent working.... the headphone out does work. What i reckon happened is that the switch that is activated when you plug in the headphones that turns off the speaker is somehow damaged.

When you angle the jack in the headphone out you can hear the speakers kick in for a second...

Is there anyway of controlling this switch in software? Can I turn off the headphone out? Will that effect the speaker switch... If I open up the laptop can I just disconnect a specific wire?

Right click the speaker icon in the system tray (bottom right)
    select playback devices

    make sure Speakers is listed
if not right click and select show disabled devices

once available select speakers and click set as defualt (at the bottom of the window

    this should re-enable your speakers

If it is a software problem , You can just reinstall the drivers and it should revert to default settings so long as you uninstall the old drivers before reinstalling the new drivers.

If its hardware which it sounds like it might be, your gonna have to open it up and cut the track running to the headphone socket which means you will not have a working headphone socket. Depending on your motherboard's setup this might completely disable all sound or it might fix your problem, post a pic of the motherboard with the headphone jack marked out.

That of course is not exactly guaranteed to work, you can try it and as long as you don't cut the track too deep you can use a pencil or conductive ink and redraw the track. Or if you want a method that is safer you could try rewiring the speakers to the headphone port, I can't tell you how because I don't have a clue what your laptop's motherboard looks like.

Or just take the easy way out and get some good speakers :D
