That bike makes a lot of sense, I believe the course is very non-technical, most of it on dirt road. Note also the minimal tread on the tyres, they are close to slicks. Surprised more people aren't on something like that if anything.

Yeah, it makes sense to me anyway. I'd say it's a hoot to ride.

Cool looking bike, but the racing handlebars look a bit strange! Think mtn bike handlebars would look better.

Do any of you know what the entry requirements are for the Leadville 100?

I actually find it quite difficult to climb on a mountain bike without any hoods to grab, I wonder if I could convert mine??

We met a guy up at the sally gap cross roads on something like that a while ago- a salsa of some sort. Rigid, steel, 29er wheels, a triple chainset, midge/mungo bars and big semi knobby tyres. It looked like a beast but you'd have to think, there's nothing it could do that some other bike couldn't do much better... master-of-none sort of thing. Cool though.

The road bars would give substantially better aerodynamics. The compromise would be low-speed maneuverability. It is after all a race, not a beauty contest! This is the theory anyway, I certainly notice the aero disadvantage on my MTB on the road.

Having said that worth noting that almost all participants including all the winners used standard MTB handlebars. Travis Brown was supporting Lance I believe and coming from cyclocross he is somewhat used to riding drop bars off road.

Outside the elite athletes it's a lottery.
