I'm a qualified electrician who has been out of work since christmas '08. Have been applying for so many jobs from trolly collector, security, general operative, super markets, anything at all and have only received a hand full of responces!! I'm desperate for work but can't see how it's going to come about! I'm online everyday, calling into sites and shops and posting my C.V.'s can't see anyway out of this

Would you not consider emmigration, it's not for everyone but it is the solution for some...
There are still articles that trade certified folks are in demand in some parts..

Firstly, can I say it really must be tough being out of work for that long but keep going and hopefully something will turn up.

I am just wondering is your CV letting you down? Are you underselling yourself perhaps?

Now I am no expert by any means but I have got some welcome feedback off other posters that helped me with my CV and if if you want I could take a look?

Thanks for the feedback, would be interested in seeing that information about the C.V.'s.

Regards leaving the country, am really considering it now but have ties here so I've to try and get a solution that suits everyone.

With regard to leaving the country where do you suggest going? This recession is global. I would go in a second if I honestly thought I could get a job abroad. Not having a second language also limits you a lot.

I was at the working abroad expo in the rds a couple a weeks ago and at a seminar about canada they said that there is work over there but you must be willing to look outside the major cities so that might be an option.

I have been looking into Canada and there seems to be a lot of Irish over there months with no work!

I don't it limits you that much. Almost everywhere speaks english. That I dunno where is better than Ireland for work.

Being off work can wreck you head. You need to do your own project to keep your head straight. Might be to run/cycle a race or some other thing.

Well, I couldn't do the job I do in another language. Even if all co workers spoke English it would be very hard to do the job. I suppose it depends on what you do.

Have you tried to get work from households\businesses who need an electrician to fix things or do small jobs? Try tenderme.ie and onlinetradesmen.com etc

Could you get some other qualification with fixing\servicing home heating systems etc?

    I feel your pain too!

Don't take unemployment personally, 22 MILLION unemployed in EU according to rte.

I also suggest a course (not that you'll get a job out of it) but to give you something to do.
Did you put ad up in B&Q, Woodies etc, always people looking for showers installled etc!
Keep yourself busy get a hobby, and don't spend all day everyday job hunting it will drive you into depression! (not getting responses)
    Keep the faith!

Are you adapting your CV for the positions you apply for, people may see you as 'over qualified' and likely just to use the role as a stop gap and therefore have to recruit again.

Also have you reviewed your CV critically keeping in mind that all spelling, layout etc must be 100% perfect or you give the person receiving the CV an excuse to put it in the rejected file before you even get to the 'has he got the skills for the job' part.

Sure there will be information on Boards about where to have your CV checked (for free) and definitely pursue that - only use a friend if you trust them to be brutally honest!

After so long out of work you may need to explain what you did during the absence (apart from look for work), best to have attended a few courses to try to upskill or cross skill (if there is such an expression).

I guess keep working at it (I was out of work March to September so I know how it feels) and try to stay positive, no agency or potential employer will want to hear from or employ a bitter individual who blames x or y for the whole situation (even if inside we do).

    Good luck

Came back from Oz earlier this year and jobs are there. I am not saying your friends are in this category but I found loads of people not bothered looking and just drank all their money away and had to go home after a few months.

But i got a good job after a few weeks and then was able to enjoy heading out and travelled around Oz as well with the money i got. Most people i know over there or met there were the same

There are definitely jobs out there and they have been as affected by the recession i can honestly say. technically they havent hit recession afaik.

I haven't been to OZ but from what I hear\read it hasn't suffered much from the global recession and in fact their Central Bank increased interest rates recently which is a sign of significant pickup in their economy. I also have a friend working in recruitment over there and he has said things are picking up.

What I meant was I could not do what I'm trained to do in a country where English is not the spoken language. Even if all co-workers spoke English how could I communicate with clients etc.
