don't touch it , who wants a 60 or whatever year old gun that looks brand new ? every knock and ding on the stock has a tale behind it , its not bad looking the way it is in my humble opinion .

restore the mechanics of the action etc , springs , pins etc and make sure its tight .

+1 on that ,the gun's got its own history, don't touch it

    +1

    Keep it's history,
and add a little bit of your own to it,
for your son's or daughters to tell the tale of generations
    of happy shooting.;)

It looks like a laquer finished stock and fore end.For what it is worth a nice oil refinished stock and fore end would suit it a lot better. The oil works better as water proofing and works well with old stocks enhancing their looks.Any good gunsmith would/should be able to do a good job for you.
