DVB-T digital - When do we get it?

    Hi, quick question.

    Do any of you smart folk know when Ireland is to get DVB-T?

    I know digital is coming, but is DVB-T the type planned here?

    I'm thinking of buying a car DVD player where this is a 120euro option. I would love to buy it, but need to make sure it'll work in Ireland.

    This has been discussed to death over in Terrestrial, but in brief, nobody really knows, various schemes since 1998 from the ill fated Digico, to the equally ill-fated Its TV, and the (well you get the message) Boxer, have all failed to get off the ground.

    The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland are currently in contract negotiations with a group called OneVision which is primarily backed by Eircom and Arquiva (the former NTL Broadcast) with TV3 and Setanta Ireland having small stakes. If this group gets the contract we could see a launch of pay-DTT next year. If not, who knows...

    To answer your other question, the technical spec is DVB-T alright, with MPEG-4 for video with MHEG-5 for digital text services. The full spec is here. All a bit academic at present however since there are no services...
