We have a builder building our house
and i'm just wondering who normally pays for the ESB connection.

    I've already paid for it,
but just wondering if you have a building contractor in to build the house,
do they normally get the ESB and water, connected for you.

If you have a contract, it should be stated in it... If there's no mention of it, it's probably your responsibility. Nearly all of the time, it will be the homeowners responsibility, not the builder.

The contractor may provide all wiring, ducting, pipework etc etc for the various services but he aint gonna pay for the connection.

Would you consider asking him to pay your connection fee for the telephone? ;)

the fees are paid by the service receiver (you) to the service provider.....

Like above, the homeowner pays for the connection. The contractor will install all necessary ductwork, wiring etc. You also have to pay the council for the water connection. This cost us 3k which was major shock on top of our 12k local development contribution. Again, the contractor did everything to get the water from the mains to the house.

No worries my friend - I know how you feel - we built our first house in '94
and our second in '04 - we went the build it ourselves route and I remember what its like counting the pennies - but you know what it'l be worth it and there will be other areas you can save on - make sure you do a snag list before givin that contractor his final payment though -
    Best of Luck!!!
